“Kayo Sri Gowri” is identified as the anthem of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore, ruled by the Wadiyar dynasty. It was not simply a song about the state: it served as part of the court’s ceremonial life. Star of Mysore described it as the former kingdom’s official anthem in 2017 (Star of Mysore, 2017).

The Times of India’s account of Mysuru Dasara says the Maharajas had a state anthem sung on special occasions, including Durbar, and reports that it is still rendered during Khas Durbar (The Times of India, 2015). That continuing palace-ritual use is distinct from the anthem’s former status as a state emblem.
Who wrote and composed it?
The sources agree on a connection to court poet Basappa or Basavappa Shastry, but they do not assign him the same role.

Basappa and Basavappa are variant spellings used by the respective reports. On the available accounts, the safest conclusion is that Shastry is associated with the song’s authorship, while the musical credit is disputed or described differently. The Times of India specifically assigns the music to Sheshanna and Bartles; the other report does not clarify whether its use of “composer” means lyricist, musical composer, or both.
What the lyrics say
The Times of India identifies the anthem’s language as Sanskrit. A Kannada-script version and English rendering appear on the reference page for “Kayo Shri Gowri,” which presents the song as praise and supplication to Gowri, also associated with Chamundeshwari. In that rendering, the prayer asks for protection and blessings for the ruler and kingdom (Wikipedia, “Kayo Shri Gowri,” reviewed 2026-10-08).

That English wording should be treated as a reference translation, not as a definitive or independently verified translation. The central devotional purpose is clearer than fine points of phrasing: the anthem invokes the goddess while expressing hopes for the sovereign and Mysore.
When did it originate?
The exact creation or adoption date is not securely established by these accounts. The Times of India places the anthem’s introduction during Chamaraja Wadiyar’s rule, which it dates from 1881. By contrast, the Wikipedia page lists 1831 for the lyrics, music and adoption, yet also connects the song with Chamarajendra Wadiyar X and gives his reign as 1868–1894. Those details do not align, so 1831 should not be presented as settled fact.

The reports therefore support a history of ceremonial use and a broad Wadiyar-court association, but they do not resolve when the song was first written or formally adopted. The date of a song’s origin should also not be confused with later evidence of its use in palace ritual.

The anthem’s ceremonial setting helps explain its connection to Dasara, the royal festival season in Mysuru. The Times of India describes it as a song for special royal occasions, including Durbar, while separately reporting that more than 5 lakh people witness the procession in most years. That figure refers to the procession, not to the anthem’s audience, and is the newspaper’s 2015 report rather than a current or independently verified count.

Star of Mysore also reported in 2017 that the Mysore Palace Board website welcomed visitors with the song. This is a dated description of the website at that time, not confirmation of its present design or of a current palace visitor experience.
