Sting honored Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson with a live performance of “God Only Knows” at a reported Sting 3.0 tour stop in Rostock, Germany. The tribute followed Wilson’s death on June 11, 2025; the concert’s date is inferred from Sting’s reported use of “today,” rather than confirmed by an official tour log.
What Sting said before the performance
According to The Coast’s report, Sting introduced the song by telling the audience: “So today, one of my heroes died,” he told the audience. “Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. He’s gone to heaven. So I want to sing a song that I love.”

The introduction cast the performance as a personal tribute: Sting described Wilson as one of his heroes and chose a song he loved.
Why “God Only Knows” connects Sting’s tribute to Wilson
Wilson co-wrote “God Only Knows,” which the Beach Boys released on their 1966 album Pet Sounds. Sting’s live version was a tribute rendition, distinct from the original Beach Boys recording on the album. The Coast’s account connects the song with Pet Sounds.

When the Rostock performance took place
The report places the performance at a Sting 3.0 tour stop in Rostock, Germany, and quotes Sting saying “today” as he referred to Wilson’s death. The Associated Press reported that Wilson died on June 11, 2025, aged 82. Taken together, those details point to June 11 for the performance, but that date is an inference, not a date verified by an official tour record. The Associated Press obituary gives Wilson’s date of death and age.
