Sting is the stage name of English singer, bassist and songwriter Gordon Sumner. He first became widely known as a member of The Police, then launched a solo career with The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985. His work since has ranged across rock and pop, jazz-influenced collaborations and projects drawing on early music.

Who is Sting?

Gordon Sumner was born in Wallsend, north-east England, on 2 October 1951. Before becoming Sting, he played bass in local groups including The Phoenix Jazzmen and Last Exit. After meeting drummer Stewart Copeland, he moved to London and formed The Police with Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers. Sting’s official biography traces that path from local bands to international success.

What band was Sting in?

Sting was the singer and bassist in The Police, whose combination of new-wave energy and reggae rhythms helped distinguish the band’s sound. Their early breakthrough came with Outlandos d’Amour and Reggatta de Blanc, followed by the albums Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity.

Police-era songs that remain central to the band’s story include “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and “Every Breath You Take.” Sting’s biography says BMI recognized the latter for more than 20 million performances, in its 2025 award listing; that is a BMI performance count, not an audience or sales figure.

#1 Best Overall

The group’s touring cycle ended in 1984. Sting then began recording as a solo artist, releasing The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985.

What are Sting’s most famous solo songs and albums?

Sting’s official biography highlights selected solo releases rather than presenting a definitive ranking. These albums offer useful entry points into different parts of his catalog:

  • The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985): his solo debut after The Police.
  • …Nothing Like the Sun: includes “Englishman in New York” and “Fragile.”
  • The Soul Cages: a later solo album in a career that continued to shift in sound and subject.
  • Ten Summoner’s Tales: includes “Fields of Gold” and “Shape of My Heart.”

These are starting points, not a complete discography or a claim that one song is objectively his most popular. The official biography also describes projects reaching beyond rock and pop into jazz and early music. For a listening path, begin with The Police for the band’s reggae-inflected new-wave sound, then compare Sting’s solo albums to hear how his arrangements and influences broadened.

What is Sting doing now?

Sting’s official site reported on 21 September 2026 that he was performing in a London residency of The Last Ship through 3 October 2026. The notice described a production with a new book by Barney Norris and direction by Leo Warner. On 28 September 2026, the site announced additional Brooklyn Paramount concerts for 20 and 21 November 2026. These are dated schedule announcements; check Sting’s official site for current dates and availability.

Sting’s approach to music

In a reflection published on Sting.com under “Summoner’s Tales,” he describes himself as a continuing student of music: “I’m still a student of music. I’m swimming in an ocean that has no end. It just keeps going. The more I learn, the more I realise I don’t know anything. So I’m going to keep searching. I’m fascinated by this world. I’m fascinated by the world of music… This is my journey, this is my path.” The official site presents the reflection in his own words.
