Hints for Strands #349
- Broad theme: “Ice packs” points to a sport played on ice.
- More direct clue: Think “Best of puck.”
- Spangram direction: It runs vertically from bottom to top.
- Starting letters: The theme entries begin SH, JE, DE, WI, AV and LI. The spangram begins HO.

The six theme entries are terms from NHL team names; the puzzle entries are not the full franchise names.

Spangram
The spangram is HOCKEYTEAM. It describes the shared theme and connects two opposite sides of the board. TechRadar and Try Hard Guides give this 10-letter spelling; it also fits the board-length check: the six theme entries total 38 letters, and HOCKEYTEAM brings the total to 48, the capacity of a 6-by-8 board. Parade lists HOCKEYTEAMS, but that extra S would make 49 letters, so it does not fit that check.
How Strands hints work
Parade reproduces the NYT gameplay instruction, “Find theme words to fill the board.” The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides. Finding three non-theme words earns a hint that reveals the letters of a theme word.
