Netflix is not cutting off every subscriber who watches on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. The issue affects some remaining legacy customers whose recurring Netflix payment is processed by Apple. If Netflix has asked you to add a payment method, move the subscription to direct Netflix billing before the current paid period ends—or it may stop renewing.
This is primarily a policy change that began in February 2024, not a newly announced universal cutoff in 2026. Netflix’s current Help Center guidance says Apple billing is unavailable to new or rejoining members, while some existing Apple-billed members in select countries may be prompted to switch.

The short answer
- Netflix bills you directly: You are not affected merely because you use the Netflix app on an Apple device.
- Apple bills your Netflix subscription and Netflix has prompted you: Add a payment method through your existing Netflix account.
- Apple bills you but Netflix has not shown a prompt: Check your billing details and renewal notices. Do not assume there is one immediate deadline for every country or account.
- You no longer want Netflix: Cancel through the company that actually bills you.
“Cut off” generally means that the membership may stop renewing after the current billing period. It does not mean that Netflix is removing its iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV app. The Netflix app remains available on Apple platforms.

The affected group is made up of some legacy Apple-billed Netflix subscribers—people who retained App Store billing after Netflix stopped offering it to most new and returning members.

Netflix distinguishes between Apple billing and Apple-device usage:
- Apple-billed subscriber: Apple processes the recurring Netflix subscription payment.
- Netflix-billed subscriber using an Apple device: Netflix processes the payment directly, even though the customer watches through the iOS, iPadOS, or tvOS app.
- Netflix.com subscriber: Signing up on Netflix.com is not affected simply because the account is used on an iPhone or iPad.
- New or returning subscriber: Apple billing generally cannot be selected when starting or rejoining Netflix.
Reporting from February 2024 identified an initial group of Basic-plan subscribers in the United States and Canada. That report should not be treated as a permanent worldwide rule. Netflix’s current wording is narrower: some existing Apple-billed members in select countries may be asked to add another payment method.
How to check who bills your Netflix account
Do not infer the billing provider from the device you use. Check the account itself:

- Open Netflix.com in a web browser and sign in.
- Open Account.
- Review Membership and Billing.
- Look for Apple as the billing provider and check whether Netflix displays a payment-update or cancellation instruction.
Cross-check Apple’s subscription records as well. On an Apple device, look under your Apple Account’s active subscriptions, and search your email for Apple-issued receipts or Apple account charges. The decisive question is whether Netflix is managed as an Apple subscription that renews through Apple.
An Apple Pay transaction, Apple Card charge, or card stored in Apple Wallet is not automatically an App Store subscription. Likewise, Netflix appearing in the App Store does not mean Apple bills your account.

How to switch to direct Netflix billing safely
If Netflix shows a payment-management option, use the existing account rather than creating a new one:
- Sign in to Netflix through a browser, not just the mobile app.
- Open Account and then Membership and Billing.
- Select the available Manage payment info or payment-update option.
- Add a valid payment method offered for your country.
- Review the plan, displayed price, currency, and next billing date.
- Confirm the change and keep using the same Netflix login.
- Afterward, check Apple subscriptions to ensure an old Apple renewal is not still active.
Netflix may ask you to accept a price or currency change. Payment options vary by country and can include cards, PayPal where supported, gift cards after eligibility conditions are met, or participating partner arrangements. Use the options shown in your own Netflix account; Apple Account balance and Apple gift cards do not automatically become direct Netflix payment methods.
Should you cancel Apple billing first?
Follow the instruction Netflix gives your account. If Netflix provides a direct migration or payment-update flow, do not cancel unnecessarily.
If Netflix does not show a cancellation or payment-management option, Apple may still control the subscription. In that case, cancellation may need to happen through Apple, followed by rejoining Netflix with another payment method after the current paid period ends. Netflix warns that Apple may charge up to 24 hours before the next renewal date, so canceling too close to renewal may not prevent the next charge.
Do not cancel and immediately open a second Netflix account. That can cause duplicate billing and separate profiles, recommendations, viewing history, My List, and household settings. The safest objective is to update the existing Netflix account whenever the available flow allows it.

What happens to your plan, price, and account history?
Switching the billing provider does not automatically guarantee the same plan or price. You may see:
- The current Netflix plan lineup instead of an older grandfathered plan.
- A different regional price or currency.
- A request to accept updated pricing.
- A plan-selection screen after cancellation and reactivation.
- A changed billing date.
Netflix does not say every Apple-billed customer will receive a price increase. The end of Apple billing, a plan change, and a price change are separate issues. Review the final confirmation screen before accepting.
Using the existing Netflix account is the best way to preserve profiles, viewing history, recommendations, My List, and account settings. However, do not treat preservation as an absolute promise if Netflix requires cancellation, reactivation, a plan migration, or account closure.
Netflix also states that plan upgrades can take effect immediately and may change the billing date, while downgrades generally take effect on the next billing date for Apple-billed plans. Confirm the timing shown on your account.
What if there is no payment-update option?
Several explanations are possible:
- The subscription is still controlled by Apple and must be canceled there.
- You are not the Netflix account owner.
- The account has already moved to direct billing.
- Netflix has not yet prompted that account.
- The subscription began through a Netflix gaming app or another special arrangement.
- You are signed in to a different Netflix account.
If the cancellation option is missing in Netflix, its Help Center guidance says the subscription may need to be canceled through Apple. If you cannot identify the Apple ID or no longer control it, contact Apple Support. If the account details appear inconsistent, contact Netflix Support before starting a replacement subscription.

Special cases to check
You switched payment methods but Apple still charges you
Netflix says customers who changed from Apple billing to another payment method after October 25, 2021 may still need to cancel the Netflix subscription through Apple to prevent future Apple charges. Check both billing systems rather than assuming the old subscription ended automatically.
You want to use a Netflix gift card
Netflix says gift cards cannot be redeemed directly on certain Apple-billed accounts. The Apple subscription must be canceled, the paid period must end, and the account must then be restarted under the applicable payment method. See Netflix’s gift-card information for market-specific availability.
Your family uses different Apple IDs
The Netflix account owner and Apple ID owner may be different people. A household member who watches Netflix may not be able to change or cancel the subscription. Identify the Apple ID that receives the subscription charge and coordinate with that person.
You are outside the United States or Canada
Do not apply the reported 2024 U.S./Canada Basic-plan scope globally. Netflix refers to “select countries” but does not establish one universal list or cutoff date on the cited Help Center page. Follow the notice and payment options displayed for your account and market.

Do not use an unverified payment link. Manually open Netflix.com, sign in, and inspect Account and Membership and Billing. The presence of an email does not by itself prove that it is fraudulent, but the account page is the safer place to verify the request.

Why Netflix is moving billing away from Apple
Direct billing gives Netflix control of the payment relationship and avoids dependence on Apple’s subscription-management layer. Apple’s App Store subscription system includes its own transaction, commission, billing-retry, and recovery rules, as described in Apple’s subscription documentation. Those economics provide reasonable industry context, but Netflix’s cited Help Center page does not state that avoiding Apple’s commission is the company’s official reason for this specific change.

Can I still watch Netflix on my iPhone or Apple TV after switching billing?
Yes. The change concerns who processes the subscription payment, not whether the Netflix app can be used on supported Apple devices.
Will switching from Apple billing definitely increase my Netflix price?
No. A higher price is not automatic, but Netflix may show current plan pricing, a different currency, or a plan change when you switch.
What happens if I do nothing?
