Stevie Wonder addressed the longstanding rumor that he can see during a performance in Cardiff, Wales, on his Love, Light and Song U.K. tour. “Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind,” he told the crowd, describing blindness as a blessing that has helped him see people beyond their appearance.
What Stevie Wonder said in Cardiff

He described blindness as a blessing, saying it let him “see people in the spirit of them, not how they look.” He continued: “Not what colour they are, but what colour is their spirit?” In context, “see” is a metaphor for looking beyond physical appearance.
Is Stevie Wonder really blind?
Wonder’s remarks are his own account: he said he became blind shortly after birth. The rumor that he can see is not substantiated by the reporting. His comments at the Cardiff concert are not a medical record or independent medical verification.

Rolling Stone UK linked to a post by Cardiff Life Magazine in reporting the exchange. That social post is a secondary record; the available account does not independently authenticate the complete performance or transcript.
What Wonder has said about becoming blind
In a 2024 conversation on The Wonder of Stevie podcast with journalist Wesley Morris and Barack Obama, Wonder recalled: “I was born. Shortly after that, I’m blind. My mother went through the different things, and so my experience with that was deep.” The report also quotes him recalling that his mother cried “every night,” and that he told her, “Mama, you shouldn’t cry, you’re making my head hurt.” These are Wonder’s recollections, as reported by Rolling Stone; they do not establish a separately documented medical history.

Humor has been part of how he talks about blindness
The Cardiff exchange combined a joke with a direct answer. Wonder had also used humor when discussing blindness during a 2015 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, as noted by Rolling Stone UK. That earlier appearance offers context for his approach, but the Cardiff remarks stand on their own: he addressed the rumor and described how he understands his blindness.
