Stevie Nicks released “The Lighthouse” on September 27, 2024, as a one-song single. She said the song was inspired by the fallout from the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade and intended it as an anthem supporting women’s rights.

When did “The Lighthouse” come out?

“The Lighthouse” was released on September 27, 2024. Apple Music lists it as a four-minute track, issued under exclusive license to Warner Records Inc. Apple Music’s listing identifies it as a single rather than an album.

What inspired the song?

Nicks connected the song’s origins to the 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade. In an interview with The Guardian, she said she watched a newscaster explain the consequences of the decision, wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.

Nicks described her purpose in personal and political terms: “This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters – and the men that love them. This is an anthem.” That is her stated intent for the song, not a neutral description of the legal decision.

  • Newly remastered version of Stevie Nick's Debut solo album, Bella Donna. Nicks joined producer Jimmy Iovine to begin recording songs for her solo debut, following the recording of Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk and subsequent tour. The 1981 album was quickly certified platinum thanks to Nicks classics like “Edge Of Seventeen,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and “Leather And Lace” (with Don Henley).

Who worked on the recording?

Billboard Brasil reported that Sheryl Crow played guitar and bass, sang backing vocals and co-produced the track with Dave Cobb. The report provides these session details, but it is not a complete official credit sheet. Billboard Brasil’s report is the source for those contributions.

What does the music video show?

The official video combines the song with footage from women’s marches and abortion-rights rallies. The protest scenes give visual context to the lighthouse imagery and the song’s advocacy. Pitchfork’s video coverage describes the footage.
