Steve Lacy’s August 2025 interview about Oh Yeah? captured him before the album came out. The record was released by RCA Records on July 17, 2026. In the conversation, Lacy described a shift toward writing lyrics in his own voice, spoke about heartbreak behind some early songs, and recounted a new romance that began online. The person he was dating was not named.
What the interview reveals about Oh Yeah?
The profile, published August 14, 2025, found Lacy discussing Oh Yeah? as an upcoming record while he was in Paris around a Yves Saint Laurent show. Its release is no longer forthcoming: Sony Music Canada announced the album’s RCA Records release on July 17, 2026.
The most revealing thread in the interview is Lacy’s account of changing how he approaches lyrics. He said that earlier in his career, songs often began with a beat and a hook, with the words taking a secondary role. On this album, he wanted the language to sound more like himself: “OK, I want to say shit how I would say shit.” That is a statement about voice and process, not a claim that every song is autobiographical.
The released album brings together guitar and synthesizer sensibilities. The FADER’s August 2025 account of the profile described it as an expansive pop record with classic-rock ballads, trip-hop and electronica moments, and more synthesizers; it also reported that Lacy self-produced it. Sony’s 2026 release announcement names SZA, Erykah Badu, and Cecile Believe among the collaborators.

How heartbreak and dating enter the story
Lacy told the interviewer that the early tracks carried the melancholy of a breakup the previous fall. He also described a newer relationship that began digitally. The account is specific about one episode: on the partner’s birthday, he met a large group of their friends and hosted an afterparty. The profile does not identify the partner, so there is no basis for naming them or treating the relationship as a public identification puzzle.
The two strands—an earlier breakup and a newer connection—make the album’s romantic context broader than a single breakup story. In July 2026, The Guardian quoted Lacy describing the album as inspired by an older, long on-and-off relationship. The Los Angeles Times characterized the released record as dealing with fame, desire, intimacy, and choices in relationships. Those later descriptions add context to the personal themes without changing what the 2025 interview said about the relationship it left unnamed.

Why “Bad Habit” matters to the profile
“Bad Habit” is career context for the conversation: it helps explain why the interview presents Lacy as an artist returning after a major hit. The Los Angeles Times described it as a defining lo-fi pop song that topped the Hot 100 and changed his life. The 2025 profile also placed it alongside “Dark Red” and “Pride” in discussing Lacy’s streaming milestones.
For a dated, attributable figure, Sony Music Canada said in its July 17, 2026 release announcement that Lacy had two songs in Spotify’s Billions Club. That is the label’s count as of the announcement, not a permanent total; streaming figures can change.
