Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel and “Make Me Smile” Singer, Dead at 73

Steve Harley, the singer-songwriter and frontman of Cockney Rebel behind “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” died on 17 March 2024, aged 73. His family said he died peacefully at home with his family by his side. News outlets reported that he had been receiving cancer treatment; the family announcement did not give a medical cause of death.

What was Steve Harley known for?

Harley led Cockney Rebel, whose debut album, The Human Menagerie, was released in 1973, according to his official biography. He became best known to many listeners for “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me),” which reached number one in the UK in 1975. The official biography says the song also reached number one in many European countries.

The track appeared on The Best Years of Our Lives, the 1975 album credited to Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. The album and its hit single are closely associated with Harley’s lasting musical legacy.

What did his family say about his death?

On 17 March 2024, Harley’s family announced his death on his official website. His daughter Greta said: “We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father has passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side.”

The Associated Press and The Guardian reported that Harley had been receiving cancer treatment. That treatment context was reported by news outlets; his family’s announcement did not specify a cause of death.
