Steve Buscemi’s publicist said the actor was OK after he was punched in Manhattan on May 8, 2024. Police arrested Clifton Williams on May 17 in connection with the assault; he was charged, and the charge is an allegation—not a finding of guilt.
What happened to Steve Buscemi in New York City?
On May 8, 2024, Buscemi was walking in Manhattan when he was punched in the face. The Associated Press reported bruising, swelling and bleeding around his left eye, and said he was taken to a nearby hospital. The AP’s report said his publicist confirmed he was OK.
Good Morning America reported that police responded at about 11:48 a.m. to an assault call on Third Avenue between East 26th and East 27th Streets. Buscemi was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition and treated for injuries around his left eye, according to the report. Good Morning America published the publicist’s fuller statement: “He is OK and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY.”
The health update came from Buscemi’s publicist, not directly from the actor. It describes his condition at the time of the May 2024 incident and is not a current health update.

When was a suspect arrested?
Police arrested Clifton Williams on May 17, 2024, in connection with the attack, the Associated Press reported. The AP said Williams, then 50, was charged with second-degree assault. The AP report said it was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could respond to the allegations.
CBS New York reported that Williams walked into the 10th Precinct to report stolen property and officers recognized him from his identification. CBS said he faced two assault counts, and that the count related to Buscemi was treated as a felony because Buscemi was 66 at the time. CBS New York’s account also reported police said another 22-year-old man had been punched on Third Avenue near East 16th Street shortly before the reported incident near East 27th Street. Those are allegations in police reporting, not findings that either assault occurred as alleged.

What happened in court?
On May 19, the AP reported that Williams had been arraigned and bail was set at $50,000. The criminal complaint alleged that two people were punched and said surveillance video captured the attack on Buscemi. These details describe the complaint and an early stage of the proceedings; they do not establish guilt or the eventual case outcome. The AP’s court update reported the arraignment.
What did officials say about assaults in New York City?
In a May 18, 2024 report, CBS New York cited NYPD figures showing felony assaults were up 15% year to date and misdemeanor assaults were up about 7%. Those were contemporaneous 2024 figures, not a current measure of citywide crime. Former NYPD Commissioner Rich Esposito told CBS: “We are seeing an uptick, and of course that’s scary to all of us, but it doesn’t mean it’s a trend that’s going to continue.” CBS New York’s report provides that context.
