The official clip confirms the segment’s subject and date, but not the headline phrase “loses it” as a direct quote or a verified description of Colbert’s on-camera behavior. Watch the official segment.
What was the Signal chat scandal?
On March 15, 2025, senior Trump administration officials used a Signal group chat to discuss an imminent U.S. military operation against Houthi targets in Yemen. Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic, was included in the chat. The Associated Press reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared operational details hours before the attack, including timing, targets, weapons and the sequence of the strikes. The Associated Press’s account describes the reported contents and the questions they raised.
The dispute was not simply whether officials discussed a military operation. It was whether the details shared were classified, how sensitive they were, and whether a commercial messaging app was appropriate for such a discussion. Those points were contested; the reporting and statements cited here do not amount to a final independent classification determination or legal finding.
What did Colbert’s segment establish?
The official Late Show with Stephen Colbert clip was published March 25, 2025, and concerned the Signal chat controversy. The available record confirms that subject and publication date, but does not establish Colbert’s exact jokes or words. Accordingly, “loses it” is headline framing, not a verified quotation or factual description of his demeanor.

What details were disputed?
Operational information in the messages
The AP reported that the chat had 18 members, including Goldberg, and that messages were set to disappear after one week. It reported that Hegseth shared details about the planned operation before it began. The Washington Post later reported that The Atlantic published the fuller transcript on March 26, 2025, prompting renewed attention to the information in the chat. The Washington Post’s report covered the transcript and competing assessments.
Classified or sensitive?
Administration representatives said the messages did not contain classified material. Hegseth said they had “no units, no locations, no routes, no flight paths, no sources, no methods, no classified information.” But lawmakers and national-security figures questioned whether the material could be treated as harmless or unclassified. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker said the information as published appeared so sensitive that, based on his knowledge, he would have wanted it classified. Former CIA paramilitary officer and former senior Pentagon official Mick Mulroy described it as highly classified and protected. Those are attributed judgments, not a final official determination.

The distinction matters: discussing operational details is not automatically proof that a complete set of “war plans” was shared, and a dispute over classification is not settled merely by one side’s assurance. The available accounts establish both the reported operational specificity and the disagreement over how it should be characterized.
Was Signal an approved channel?
The AP described Signal as a publicly available encrypted app that was not approved for carrying classified information. Encryption does not itself make an app an authorized place to handle classified government material. The committee’s claims about an unsecured platform and classified discussion reflect the lawmakers’ characterization of the incident, rather than a court finding.

What happened after the chat became public?
On March 25, 2025, House Oversight Committee Democrats announced an investigation and asked relevant officials to preserve records. Their release said National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed at a Senate hearing that day that they had participated in the chat. The committee described the incident as a security breach and raised concerns about classified discussions and potential risks to military and intelligence personnel; those statements represent the committee members’ position. Read the committee Democrats’ announcement.
The available reporting leaves open whether the relevant records were properly archived, whether federal law was violated, and what consequences, if any, followed. The initial investigation announcement and the competing public claims are not proof of a completed inquiry or a final finding.

Why did officials’ critics object?
Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said sharing the information on a commercial app before a strike “would be a violation of everything that we’re about,” according to the AP. Wicker’s concern focused on the apparent sensitivity of the published information and whether it merited classification. Together, those reactions illustrate why the episode drew scrutiny even as administration representatives denied that classified material had been shared.
The central questions are therefore distinct: what operational details were discussed, whether those details were formally classified, whether the communications were properly handled and retained, and what investigators ultimately determine. The public statements cited above address parts of that debate but do not resolve all of it.
