Stephen Colbert’s “new CBS late-night gig” is a guest role, not a new real-world show: he plays Scotty Bristol, the fictional host of Way Late With Scotty Bristol, in the season 3 premiere of Elsbeth.
Who does Colbert play in Elsbeth?
Colbert guest-stars as Scotty Bristol, a late-night host in the show-within-the-show Way Late With Scotty Bristol. CBS’s announcement describes the episode as a story about backstage tensions among a talk-show host, his head writer and her husband, who is also the host’s on-air sidekick. CBS’s announcement identifies Amy Sedaris as Laurel, the head writer, and Andy Richter as Mickey, her husband and the sidekick.

How is the role connected to The Late Show?
The fictional appearance came amid news about Colbert’s real program. The Associated Press reported on July 18, 2025, that CBS planned to end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May 2026, citing the network’s stated financial reason. AP also reported Colbert telling his audience, “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.” His Elsbeth character is not a replacement host or a real new program. Read the Associated Press report.
Where did CBS say viewers could watch it?
In its August 2025 announcement, CBS said the premiere would air on the CBS Television Network and stream on Paramount+. Under the terms stated then, Premium subscribers could watch live and on demand, while Essential subscribers could watch on demand the day after broadcast. Those are the announcement’s 2025 terms, not a guarantee of current access: streaming availability and plan features can vary by date and territory, so check Paramount+ for current details.
