The profile does not give the year, so it does not verify the title’s “only 10 years ago” timeframe. It does describe difficulties she encountered at school and in her early finance career before the diagnosis.
What the University of Michigan profile says about Ruhle
The University of Michigan profile identifies Ruhle as a political journalist and traces the suggestion to seek testing to her son’s dyslexia diagnosis. It reports that Ruhle had low reading comprehension at school and persuaded teachers to let her give presentations instead of taking tests. The profile says she later began her finance career as a researcher, then moved into sales because research required substantial reading; it subsequently describes her move into political interviewing. The profile’s account supports a late diagnosis, but not a specific date. The headline’s “only 10 years ago” should therefore be treated as framing rather than a verified year: the profile does not establish when she was diagnosed.
Can dyslexia be diagnosed in adulthood?
Yes. A diagnosis made in adulthood is a late recognition of a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference, not evidence that dyslexia began in adulthood. The Dyslexia Association of Singapore explains that people may recognize it later because they have compensated, normalized the extra effort, chosen activities that draw on their strengths, or worked harder at particular tasks. Its adult guidance was updated on 8 October 2026 and frames the question as “Why am I only recognising this now?” Dyslexia Association of Singapore.

What adult signs might prompt someone to look into dyslexia?
Possible indicators can include slow reading or writing, inconsistent spelling, rereading paragraphs, confusing similar-looking words, difficulty organizing thoughts on paper, or trouble prioritizing and managing time. These are possible signs, not a diagnosis; experiences vary from person to person. The British Dyslexia Association lists these indicators in its adult guidance. Does an online checklist diagnose dyslexia?
No. A checklist or screener can suggest whether further investigation may be useful, but it cannot confirm dyslexia. The British Dyslexia Association distinguishes screening from a formal diagnostic assessment, which it says must be carried out by a certified assessor. British Dyslexia Association: How is dyslexia diagnosed?
| Route | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Checklist or screening | Indicate whether it may be useful to investigate reading, writing, or related difficulties further. | Diagnose dyslexia. |
| Diagnostic assessment | Assess a person’s profile and support decisions about next steps. | Be replaced by an online checklist; the British Dyslexia Association says formal diagnosis requires assessment by a certified assessor. |
Assessment guidance from the International Dyslexia Association describes an evaluation that draws on interviews, observations, and testing, interpreted by a professional familiar with dyslexia across developmental stages. It also cautions that an initial diagnosis should be tentative in light of the available evidence. International Dyslexia Association: Testing and Evaluation.
