States of America, a documentary-short series featuring one person from each state, is scheduled to begin airing on PBS stations nationwide and streaming in the PBS app on November 1, 2026. The films explore how place shapes identity and what makes somewhere feel like home; the announcement does not give local airtimes.
What is States of America about?
Created and produced by Brad Barber, States of America is a collection of short documentaries featuring one person from each of the 50 states. The series asks how a state influences identity, why people adopt places as home, and what it means to be “from” somewhere. The project describes the films as a “mosaic of America’s famously emerging identity.” The series’ About page lays out those questions; WORLD Channel likewise characterizes the shorts as stories about home and identity told through everyday people.
When and where can you watch?
The project’s homepage announces that the series will air on PBS stations nationwide and stream on the PBS app starting November 1, 2026. It credits American Public Television and KQED in that rollout announcement. Check the project’s announcement for the stated launch information.
- Broadcast: The films are announced for PBS stations nationwide. The announcement does not list station-by-station carriage or local airtimes, so check your local PBS station’s listings for the schedule where you live.
- Streaming: The PBS app is also listed as a viewing route. The announcement does not establish that every episode will appear in every market at the same time.
How did the series reach this rollout?
The project describes a release history spanning several years. Brad Barber self-released the first shorts in 2017. In 2019, KQED became a presenting station, while WORLD Channel acted as national public television distributor and aired two compilation episodes on Local, USA. In 2020, WORLD released the first 29 state episodes through its web platforms, PBS.org, and the PBS app. The project’s account of its history says episodes 30–50 make up the completed second part.
