Ba’s Book turns a father’s memoir into a shared act of remembering. In this Canadian hybrid documentary, director Ashley Duong returns with her father, Anh, and other relatives to the family’s ancestral village, staging parts of the history he wrote down while letting the family’s responses reshape the telling. Its subject is not only what happened in connection with the Vietnam War and the Iranian Revolution, but what becomes possible when relatives revisit displacement and inherited pain together.
What is Ba’s Book about?
Anh Duong’s memoir, Dear Da-Lê: A Father’s Memoir of the Vietnam War and the Iranian Revolution, is the starting point for the film. His daughter, Ashley Da-Lê Duong, adapts that written account into a collaborative documentary involving her father and relatives. The family returns to its ancestral village and takes part in live-action reenactments alongside documentary footage and intimate observation.
The historical references span Vietnam and Iran; the film’s present-tense focus is the family’s work of making a difficult past speakable. The two settings should not be collapsed into one story: the film connects them through Anh’s account and the family’s experience of displacement, while attending to the consequences of war across generations.

How does the film use reenactment?
Reenactment here is not simply a way to illustrate a completed historical account. The family performs, questions, interrupts, and reshapes scenes as it decides what it is ready to face. That makes the making of the film part of its subject: relatives are not only recounting inherited history but negotiating how it can be represented together.
This method creates a productive tension between performance and documentary observation. A staged scene can give family members a shared structure for approaching events that may be hard to discuss directly; at the same time, staging necessarily changes how a memory is expressed and recorded. The film’s central question is therefore not whether reenactment reproduces the past exactly, but how the act of revisiting it affects what can be remembered, said, and shared.

That approach also makes authorship feel personal and collective at once. Ashley Duong shapes the film from her father’s memoir, but the family’s participation and decisions complicate any simple idea that one account can speak for everyone. The process offers room for candor without pretending that performance removes the gaps, disagreements, or limits in family memory.

By bringing relatives into the reconstruction, the film treats memory as something shaped in conversation, not merely preserved in a single person’s written record. Displacement and the effects of war
The film connects the father’s experiences associated with Vietnam and Iran to a family living with the effects of displacement across generations. Its scope is intimate rather than a general history of either conflict. The personal frame keeps attention on how war travels through family relationships and what it takes to approach that inheritance together.

The project credits Ashley Da-Lê Duong as director, with Ina Fichman and Ashley Duong as producers. Ashley Da-Lê Duong and Steven Sych are credited as writers; Mrinal Desai is director of photography; Anouk Deschênes and Ashley Duong are editors; and Peter Venne composed the original music. Where has the film screened?
The official project page lists TIFF 2026 as the world premiere and the BFI London Film Festival 2026 as the international premiere, alongside screenings at festivals in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Intuitive Pictures also confirms the film’s selection for TIFF 2026. Festival schedules and ticket availability can change, so consult the relevant event or the official project page for current listings.
The official page reports a Documentary Magazine Award at Cannes Docs, as well as a Calgary International Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Creative Storytelling and an Audience Choice Award for Canadian Documentary. Those award names and attributions are the film project’s published claims.
Is Ba’s Book streaming?
The available release information documents festival screenings but does not confirm a general theatrical, streaming, DVD, or Blu-ray release. A secondary film database has previously noted that it knew of no DVD or VOD edition, but that note is not a distributor announcement and may be out of date. No streaming service or home-release date is established by the cited listings; check the official project page for updates.
