Start the week with Harold Ramis’s 1993 comedy Groundhog Day: a film about a man who relives February 2 until he begins to see the day—and the people in it—differently. Its comic time loop makes familiar repetition a way to explore attention, self-improvement, love, and kindness.
What is Groundhog Day about?
Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day event. When a blizzard prevents the crew from leaving, Phil wakes to find that February 2 is repeating. He encounters the same people and events again and again, while everyone around him experiences the day only once. Sony Pictures’ synopsis and the Academy’s film entry establish the premise and principal credits.

The film was directed and co-written by Harold Ramis, from a story and screenplay by Danny Rubin. Its cast includes Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott alongside Murray. The setup gives Phil a comic freedom from ordinary consequences, but the movie’s deeper interest is what he does with the repetition—and what it gradually reveals about him.
Why the repetition becomes a story about change
At first, Phil treats the repeated day as an opportunity to serve himself. As the same encounters recur, he can learn details, refine his responses, and notice what he previously ignored. The shift is not simply that he becomes better at getting what he wants; he starts responding to other people as people, rather than as pieces of a routine he can manipulate.

- A weatherman (Bill Murray) is trapped in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. Co-stars Andie MacDowell.
That reading is supported by several institutional descriptions, though it is not the film’s only possible meaning. The Academy frames Phil’s experience as an existential quest, the American Film Institute calls the approach inventive self-improvement, and a Library of Congress National Film Registry essay draws attention to love, kindness, and doing good. AFI Movie Club, the Library of Congress essay, and the Academy entry offer those complementary perspectives.
That makes the film an apt week-start choice without turning it into a self-help lesson. Its question is less “How can I make every day productive?” than “What changes when I pay attention to the day and the people I usually take for granted?” Phil’s loop is fantastical; the familiar routines it puts under a spotlight are not.

How the film makes the loop work
Comedy gives the repetition its rhythm: a familiar situation returns, but Phil’s knowledge of it changes what happens next. One especially clear example is his repeated courtship of Rita, played by MacDowell. In a Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Ramis singled out the montage in which Phil learns Rita’s favorite drink and later orders it for her. The moment demonstrates both the loop’s comic mechanics and its limit: knowing a detail can help Phil perform attentiveness, but genuine change requires more than collecting useful information.
Ramis also described how the film came to him: “I came up with it when I read Danny Rubin’s original script.” The Fresh Air transcript preserves that recollection and his account of the courtship sequence. A Library of Congress essay quotes Ramis comparing the screenplay’s story to Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, “but with an attitude that spoke more to today’s world.” That comparison is Ramis’s, as quoted in the essay, rather than a claim that the films tell the same story.
Where it was filmed—and where it was set
The story is set in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but the principal town scenes were filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. The AFI Catalog says Ramis chose Woodstock because Punxsutawney lacked the town center the production needed. It records principal photography in Woodstock and Chicago from March 16 to June 10, 1992, and identifies Woodstock’s opera house as the location for the Pennsylvanian Hotel interiors and exteriors. The Tip Top Café was built on the town square. See the AFI Catalog record for the production details.
The distinction matters if you picture the film’s recognizable town as a documentary record of Punxsutawney: its setting and filming location are not the same. Woodstock also holds an annual Groundhog Days festival, noted in the AFI Catalog.

Why it still makes sense to watch
Groundhog Day entered the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2006, a record of its preservation significance rather than a guarantee that every viewer will read it the same way. The film’s premise has also left a mark on everyday language: AFI notes that “Groundhog Day” is commonly used for a repetitive situation. Its lasting appeal, though, lies in how it turns that shorthand into a character story—one where repetition can expose selfishness, create room to learn, and make kindness more than a convenient tactic.
For a Monday watch, it offers an unusually warm counterpoint to the idea that routine is just something to endure. Phil cannot make the day stop repeating by wishing for novelty; he has to change how he meets it. The film is a comedy first, but its most satisfying transformation comes when his attention moves beyond himself.
