Get Out (2017), written and directed by Jordan Peele, begins with a familiar milestone: Chris visits the estate of his white girlfriend’s family. Their eager hospitality soon feels less welcoming than unsettling, and Chris discovers a sinister plot. It is a horror-thriller that uses suspense to make its social commentary part of the story, not a separate speech.
What is Get Out about?
Chris travels with his girlfriend to meet her family at their estate. The family’s accommodating manner and the atmosphere around the visit grow increasingly disturbing as Chris senses that something is wrong. Universal describes the film as a speculative thriller, a gripping thriller, and provocative commentary; its official synopsis introduces the premise without giving away the plot’s turns: Universal Pictures’ Get Out page.

That contrast between an ordinary social situation and mounting dread is the film’s central engine. The setup gives the horror a recognizable starting point, while the estate becomes a place where politeness itself can feel threatening. The recommendation is best kept spoiler-light: the discovery of a sinister plot is enough to know before watching.
How does the film approach race and horror?
Peele described his intention directly: “This movie explores why black people are afraid of white people.” That is the director’s framing of the film, not a claim that one story explains every experience. In the film, suspense and social discomfort operate together: the tension comes not only from what Chris encounters, but also from the gap between the family’s outward welcome and the unease he experiences.

Peele also said, “We knew we were creating a movie that defied categorization, so the fact that it continues to do so is pretty satisfying.” The blend is part of the appeal: Get Out uses horror and thriller conventions while inviting viewers to consider the racial dynamics beneath its premise. For the two interview excerpts and their context, see TIME’s 2017 interview with Peele and TIME’s 2018 interview.
Is Get Out a good film to start the week with?
It suits viewers who want suspense with a clear thematic dimension, rather than horror that relies only on shocks or a thriller focused only on solving a mystery. The story’s familiar social setup gives the tension an immediate point of entry; its commentary gives viewers something to think about beyond the scares.
