Hedda is Nia DaCosta’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1891 play Hedda Gabler, recast around a pivotal change: Hedda’s former lover is a woman. Set during a party at an English country estate in the 1950s, the film brings ambition, old resentments and social maneuvering into close quarters.

What is Hedda about?

Hedda (Tessa Thompson) hosts a gathering at the countryside home she shares with her academic husband, George (Tom Bateman). Among the guests are Eileen (Nina Hoss), Hedda’s former lover, and Thea (Imogen Poots). The party becomes a pressure chamber: polite smiles and barbed exchanges accompany contests over influence, status and the shape of the characters’ futures.

The film is set in 1950s England and runs 107 minutes, according to Scroll.in’s 2025 review.

How does DaCosta adapt Ibsen’s play?

DaCosta directs and adapts the film from Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, first published in 1891. The central confirmed change is that Hedda’s former lover, a man in the play, becomes a woman in the film. Scroll.in describes this shift as adding a queer dimension to the story.

That change reshapes the relationships at the heart of the gathering, while the party setting makes personal histories and social ambitions collide in the present. A fuller scene-by-scene comparison with the play is not established by the available review, so the adaptation is best understood through these broad contrasts rather than assumed plot-by-plot differences.

What gives the film its tension?

Scroll.in’s review calls Hedda an absorbing character study, emphasizing its tense party setting, cutting exchanges and social maneuvering. The pressure comes not only from Hedda’s attempts to direct events, but from a world in which everyone is negotiating for room to act.

In the review’s reading, Hedda seeks agency within a social order that limits women, yet she is also implicated in that order. The other characters, too, can be both targets of its rules and participants in enforcing them. That tension keeps the story from offering easy moral answers: control may be a means of survival, but the pursuit of it can reproduce the very constraints a person wants to escape.

Where was it available to watch?

Scroll.in reported on 3 November 2025 that Hedda was out on Prime Video. That is a dated platform note, not confirmation of current availability or access in every country. Check the Prime Video catalog for your region for its present listing.
