Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi is a love story shaped by political upheaval: Sudhir Mishra places three young people’s relationships, ambitions and convictions against India from the late 1960s into the late 1970s. Its story reaches the 1975 Emergency, but the film’s central tension is intimate as well as political—what people owe to each other, and what they believe they owe to the country they have inherited.
What is Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi about?
The film follows three friends whose lives are changed by ideology, ambition and relationships in politically charged India. Pritish Nandy Communications describes it as a love story set amid the country’s political decay from the late 1960s through the late 1970s; Prime Video’s listing likewise emphasizes the way the friends’ convictions and personal ties alter their paths. The politics are not a separate backdrop to the romance: choices made in private take shape under pressure from public events.

The title was directed by Sudhir Mishra and released on 15 April 2005, according to the production company’s official film page. Its principal cast includes Kay Kay Menon, Chitrangda Singh and Shiney Ahuja, alongside Saurabh Shukla, Ram Kapoor and Yashpal Sharma.
How does the film place private passions in a political crisis?
Its broad timeline spans the late 1960s to the late 1970s. The Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art archive synopsis makes the historical pressure more specific: it places the story in 1975, when a state of Internal Emergency is declared. That anchors the drama to a consequential moment without making the film simply a documentary account of the Emergency.
#1 Best Overall
The story’s emotional and political strands meet in the characters’ conflicting commitments. Love, ambition and ideological belief can pull in different directions; the film asks what happens when personal decisions are made in a period when dissent and political loyalty carry heightened stakes. That contrast—between the life a person wants and the cause they choose to serve—is why its passions are both personal and political.
What did Sudhir Mishra later say about the generation in the film?
In a 2025 interview with Devyani Onial for The Indian Express, Mishra reflected on the generational challenge at the heart of the film: “There was a generation that did not agree with the idea of India that was handed to them by their parents who had fought for freedom.” The remark is the director’s later interpretation of the generation he portrayed, not a neutral historical summary. It helps frame the characters’ rebellion as a dispute over inherited ideals as much as a response to the political moment.
