“Maclunkey” is the word Greedo says just before the shooting in the Disney+ version of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Lucasfilm told Vanity Fair that George Lucas made the change before he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. Greedo actor Paul Blake said he understood the Huttese word to mean roughly “you’re dead,” but that is Blake’s qualified account—not a definitive official translation.
What does “Maclunkey” mean?
The word is heard and commonly transcribed as “Maclunkey.” The subtitles discussed by Vanity Fair do not translate it. Paul Blake, who played Greedo, said his understanding was that it was Huttese and “translated basically means ‘you’re dead’.” That wording reflects Blake’s understanding; the available reporting does not establish an authoritative translation. Blake’s interview with Fantha Tracks gives his account.
Who added the line, and when?
Lucasfilm confirmed to Vanity Fair that George Lucas made the change before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney in 2012. The altered scene became widely noticed when Disney+ launched in 2019. Those are different milestones: the reporting places Lucas’s edit before the sale, but does not give the exact date he completed it. Disney+ brought the version to a broad audience; the reported attribution does not describe the word as a new Disney+ editorial decision. Anthony Breznican’s November 12, 2019, report for Vanity Fair details Lucasfilm’s confirmation.
How the Han–Greedo scene changed across versions
“Maclunkey” arrived after several revisions to the scene. The history matters because the spoken line is only one part of a sequence whose shooting order has changed between versions.

| Version | Who fires first or when | Greedo’s added line | Availability milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original version | Han shoots Greedo under the table. | No “Maclunkey” line is described. | The original film was released in 1977. |
| Special Edition | Greedo fires first, as shown by added effects. | No “Maclunkey” line is described. | The Special Edition appeared in 1997. |
| Later recut | Han and Greedo fire at about the same time. | No “Maclunkey” line is described. | The cited reporting does not specify a separate release date for this recut. |
| Disney+ version | The exchange retains the simultaneous-shot approach described in Blake’s account. | Greedo says “Maclunkey” immediately before the shooting. | The version became widely noticed with Disney+’s 2019 launch; Lucasfilm said Lucas had made the change before the 2012 sale. |
Why did Lucas add “Maclunkey”?
The reason has not been confirmed in the cited reporting. Vanity Fair said the motivation was unknown. The idea that the line was meant to make Han’s shot seem more justified is speculation, not an established explanation from Lucas or Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm’s reported attribution points to George Lucas: it said he made the change before the 2012 sale. The fact that viewers encountered the altered version on Disney+ in 2019 does not show that Disney added the word for the streaming release.
