Star Wars: Visions Season 3 is an anthology, not a single unfolding story, but its strongest returning short makes a persuasive case for the headline’s prequel-era comparison. “The Duel: Payback” brings Ronin back for a sword fight that explicitly echoes Anakin and Obi-Wan’s battle on Mustafar. For this reviewer, the duel’s stylized movement and dramatic intensity make it the season’s standout action sequence—though the other eight shorts offer a much broader range than lightsaber combat alone.
What is in Star Wars: Visions Season 3?
Released on Disney+ on October 29, 2025, Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 consists of nine anime shorts from Japanese studios. It brings back Kamikaze Douga, Kinema citrus, Production I.G, and TRIGGER, while adding ANIMA (co-producing with Kamikaze Douga), david production, Polygon Pictures, Project Studio Q, and WIT Studio. Lucasfilm’s announcement and Disney+’s series listing describe the volume and its release.
The season mixes self-contained stories with three direct continuations of Volume 1: “The Duel” continues in “The Duel: Payback,” “The Village Bride” continues in “The Lost Ones,” and “The Ninth Jedi” continues in “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope.” You can watch the entries without treating them as chapters of one season-long plot, but those follow-ups carry added context and payoff if you remember the earlier shorts.
Are the lightsaber duels any good?
“The Duel: Payback” is the season’s central showcase
Yes—especially in “The Duel: Payback.” The short reunites viewers with Ronin and sets him against the Grand Master. Its fight is an expressive piece of animation rather than a live-action duel translated into another medium: the imagery can stretch, linger, and emphasize speed in ways that give each exchange its own visual character. The result feels heightened without losing the sense of two opponents reading and answering one another.

The prequel comparison has a specific basis, not just a similar mood. Lucasfilm’s Volume 3 viewing guide says the battle pays homage to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s duel on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. That connection makes the episode’s fire-and-fury intensity legible, while the short gives the encounter its own argument about what makes someone a Jedi.
How the Grand Master fight creates its effect
Director Takanobu Mizuno said the team layered a ghosting effect over realistic fight choreography to convey the Grand Master’s speed and strength, using real sword-master choreographers as reference. That is the filmmaker’s account of the design, rather than an independent technical analysis. Mizuno also described snowy mountains as a callback to Hoth and artificial-island scenes as inspired by Endor. Those references draw on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi while keeping the episode’s imagery rooted in its own stylized world. In an official interview, Mizuno also frames the story around a question he hopes viewers will consider: “Can [The Grand Master] truly be called a Jedi? And what really is it that makes a Jedi in the first place? I hope viewers will find themselves pondering that for themselves.”

The duels are not the whole season
Volume 3’s action and storytelling vary by short, so the best comparison is not whether every entry matches “The Duel: Payback.” Consider visual design, how clearly a fight communicates movement and stakes, emotional payoff, how familiar Star Wars ideas are reinterpreted, and whether an episode gains from earlier-volume context. Lucasfilm’s guide links “The Song of Four Wings” to The Empire Strikes Back through a rebel princess, AT-AT battles on snowy terrain, and a deceptively small creature. “The Smuggler” brings to mind Andor through political intrigue and early Rebellion activity, while “The Lost Ones” connects with Rebels and The Last Jedi. These are different ways to revisit familiar corners of the galaxy, not pieces of one shared plot.
Is “The Duel: Payback” connected to “The Duel”?
Yes. It is a direct follow-up to the Volume 1 short “The Duel,” bringing Ronin back into conflict with the Grand Master. The distinction matters: “The Duel: Payback” continues that story, but the other Volume 3 entries are not all sequels. Lucasfilm’s episode guide identifies the returning storylines, and the Volume 3 announcement describes the new collection.

Season 3 is most compelling when it uses animation to do more than reproduce familiar Star Wars imagery. “The Duel: Payback” makes its Mustafar homage explicit, then pushes the sword fight into a visual register of its own. The other shorts widen the appeal through distinct styles, moods, and reinterpretations, with several returning stories offering extra reward to viewers who know Volume 1. The season’s strongest duel earns the comparison to the prequels as a personal critical judgment—not as a claim of consensus—and the anthology is at its best when it lets each filmmaker choose a different way into the galaxy.
