Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is Episode I and the first film in the prequel trilogy. Written and directed by George Lucas, it follows Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they encounter young Anakin Skywalker during a crisis on Naboo. The film opened in the United States on May 19, 1999, beginning the saga’s account of Anakin’s early life.
What is The Phantom Menace about?
A hostile blockade threatens Naboo, and Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, help Queen Amidala escape. Their journey takes them to Tatooine, where they meet nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker. Anakin wins a podrace and gains his freedom; the group returns to Naboo, where the Jedi confront Darth Maul and discover a wider Sith scheme. This is the film’s central premise as summarized by StarWars.com and Disney+.
Qui-Gon’s advice to Anakin captures one of the film’s recurring ideas: “Remember, concentrate on the moment. Feel, don’t think. Use your instincts.” The quotation appears on Lucasfilm’s production page.
How does Episode I fit into the Star Wars timeline?
The film takes place before the original trilogy and starts the prequel trilogy’s story of Anakin’s youth and the events leading toward his transformation. Its key introductions to the film saga include young Anakin, Padawan Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Padmé Amidala, Darth Sidious and Darth Maul. StarWars.com’s 25th-anniversary retrospective describes the film’s place in the saga and its characters.

- The Skywalker saga begins with the story of Anakin Skywalker, a young boy living on the desert planet Tatooine who is unusually strong with the Force. Trained to be a Jedi by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin bristles under the restraints imposed by the Jedi Order — leading to dire consequences throughout the entire galaxy.
Darth Maul is the Sith opponent the Jedi face in the film’s Naboo conflict. The official synopsis situates that confrontation within the larger crisis rather than treating it as a separate story.

Why the film mattered to Star Wars and visual effects
The Phantom Menace arrived as the first new Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi (1983) and launched the prequel trilogy. In an oral history, Lucas said his decision to make Episode I was “more or less driven by technology.” He also explained the purpose of telling the prequel story: “I decided that it would be important to finish it off and do the backstory because things that I thought would be self-evident about the story, the audience didn’t get.” Both statements are quoted in StarWars.com’s oral history.

Lucasfilm describes the film as combining practical effects with digital artistry and technology. StarWars.com’s retrospective calls it a landmark in visual-effects development; that is the publisher’s characterization, not a quantified ranking. The oral history discusses Jar Jar Binks as a major computer-generated character and the technology behind the production.
The production also involved substantial physical work. A StarWars.com account says a storm damaged most of the Mos Espa set in Tunisia and the Tunisian army helped rebuild it. The same article reports that 300 aluminum lightsaber blades were used in filming. These are publication-reported production details, not independently audited totals. Film-era LEGO and other licensed products
The film’s release was accompanied by licensed merchandise. Lucasfilm’s history of the film’s licensing documents LEGO and Hasbro products, including figures, vehicles and playsets. It reports that 13 standard LEGO Star Wars sets were released in 1999 and identifies the Naboo Starfighter as one of the first sets, appearing on shelves alongside the film. This is historical context, not evidence that a particular set is currently in stock. See Lucasfilm’s history of objects commemorating the film.
Lucasfilm also names the 1999 book The Making of Episode I: The Phantom Menace by Laurent Bouzereau and Jody Duncan. Historical mentions do not establish current product availability.
