Sigourney Weaver plays Colonel Ward, an X-wing fighter pilot who has spent her life fighting for the Republic and against the Empire. Although the headline’s “Rebel pilot” phrasing points toward that history, the film’s official materials identify Ward as a New Republic leader—not as a member of the Rebel Alliance.
What the first-look gallery shows
The official film page includes 35 still images. It is a gallery of images, not a newly announced release or a separate documentary. The film itself has already premiered: StarWars.com gives its release date as May 22, 2026, and currently lists it as available on digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Disney+.
Who Sigourney Weaver plays
Weaver plays Colonel Ward. In an official StarWars.com interview, Weaver calls her character “an X-wing fighter pilot” and says she has spent her life fighting for the Republic and against the Empire. The official description presents Ward as a New Republic leader. Those details support describing her as a pilot with a history of fighting the Empire; they do not establish that she is a Rebel Alliance member.
In the film’s story, the New Republic enlists Din Djarin and Grogu to deal with Imperial warlords still scattered across the galaxy. Official trailer coverage describes Ward’s mission for the pair as hunting Imperial war criminals and protecting the peace.

How the film follows the series
The Mandalorian and Grogu brings Din Djarin and Grogu from the Disney+ series to the big screen in a standalone story. Lucasfilm says the film picks up where the series left off and is intended to work for both new and longtime fans. Its setting is the New Republic era, after the Empire’s fall, while remnants of Imperial power remain a threat.
Cast and filmmaking credits
Jon Favreau directed the film. The official interview lists Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian, Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt. Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor are credited as writers; Ludwig Göransson composed the music.

Legacy Effects performer Jason Matthews explains the challenge: “We have to tell a story, and Grogu doesn’t deliver any dialogue, just sounds. He’s got to tell a great deal through body language, expressions, emotions.”
