Daisy Ridley stars in We Bury the Dead, a survival thriller written and directed by Western Australian filmmaker Zak Hilditch. Filming began in Albany in February 2024 and continued across Western Australia’s Great Southern region. The film’s story is set in Tasmania, not Western Australia.
What is We Bury the Dead about?
Ridley plays Ava, whose husband goes missing after a catastrophic military experiment. She joins a body retrieval unit in the hope of finding him alive, but the corpses she is tasked with burying begin to show signs of life. Screenwest described the film as a story about grief, loss and the undead.

Who is in the cast and who made the film?
Ridley leads the announced cast, which also includes Brenton Thwaites and Mark Coles Smith. Hilditch wrote and directed the film.
Where was the film shot?
Production began in Albany, in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, and filmed across the region in 2024. Screenwest’s announcement on 22 February 2024 said filming was expected to run for five weeks. The Western Australian locations are production locations; Screenwest describes the story as unfolding in the aftermath of the experiment in Tasmania. Screenwest’s production announcement includes Hilditch’s comments about working in Albany and the local community’s welcome.

What happened after filming?
On 23 January 2025, Screenwest announced that We Bury the Dead had been selected for a scheduled world premiere at SXSW in Austin in March 2025. Hilditch called the selection an honour and said he looked forward to showcasing Albany on the big screen. The announcement records the planned festival premiere; it is not a separate confirmation of a later release date. Screenwest’s SXSW announcement has Hilditch’s full statement.
In September 2025, the Government of Western Australia said the production returned an estimated $9.3 million to the state economy and described the film as a finalist for the 2025 CinefestOZ Film Prize. The $9.3 million figure is the government’s estimate for this production, not a general measure of the film sector’s economic impact. The government statement provides those details.

Who funded and represented the production?
Screenwest’s February 2024 announcement named Screen Australia, Screenwest, Lotterywest, the WA Regional Screen Fund, Gramercy Park Media and Peachtree Media Partners as funders. It identified Umbrella Entertainment as the theatrical distributor in Australia and New Zealand, and NEON as international sales agent. These are the arrangements reported in that 2024 announcement.
