Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld is worth watching if you enjoy character-led animated stories and are happy with two compact arcs rather than one continuous plot. Its six episodes split evenly between Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane. Ventress’s story carries more continuity weight, especially if you know how Dark Disciple ended; Cad Bane’s centers on an old friend turned marshal. You can follow the premise without completing a checklist of earlier Star Wars titles, but Ventress’s return will land more clearly with some background.
What is Tales of the Underworld about?
The third animated anthology in the Tales series, after Tales of the Jedi (2022) and Tales of the Empire (2024), premiered on Disney+ on May 4, 2025. Lucasfilm describes its setting as the “Reign of the Empire.” The official premise pairs two stories: former assassin and bounty hunter Asajj Ventress gets a new chance at life and goes on the run with an unexpected ally, while outlaw Cad Bane faces an old friend who has become a marshal. StarWars.com’s series listing gives the season a TV-PG rating.

This is not a single ensemble adventure. StarWars.com’s interview with Ventress voice actor Nika Futterman describes three episodes tracing Ventress’s journey back to life and into post-Order 66 bounty hunting, and three featuring Bane. The interview is also the clearest official source for the season’s split structure.
Is it worth watching?
For viewers drawn to familiar characters in new circumstances, the format is a good fit: each half can concentrate on one character’s conflict instead of carrying a long, shared plot. The trade-off is that short-form storytelling offers less room for the gradual development a longer series can provide. If you want a sprawling new story or a full episode-by-episode continuation of another show, this anthology is not designed to be that.
#1 Best Overall
One outside assessment is favorable but qualified. In a July 2026 ranking, Space.com judged Tales of the Underworld closer to the storytelling level it expects from Lucasfilm Animation than Tales of the Empire, and argued that the established villains’ stories explore enough new ground to justify the shorts. That is Space.com’s view, not a critical consensus or audience score.
How do the Ventress and Cad Bane arcs compare?
| Arc | What it focuses on | Background that helps | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asajj Ventress | Her return to life, a new ally, and bounty-hunting adventures after Order 66. | Knowledge of Dark Disciple makes her return more meaningful. Earlier familiarity is useful context, not an official prerequisite. | Viewers interested in personal change and continuity with Ventress’s earlier story. |
| Cad Bane | An outlaw confronting an old friend who is now a marshal. | The official premise establishes this conflict; the cited official sources do not set a specific viewing prerequisite. | Viewers who prefer a focused outlaw-versus-marshal conflict. |
These are different entry points, not a basis for declaring one half objectively better. The most relevant question is whether you want Ventress’s personal and continuity thread or Bane’s conflict with someone from his past.

Do you need to know Ventress’s earlier story first?
No particular earlier episode or book is identified by Lucasfilm as required viewing. As a viewing recommendation, though, some context helps with the Ventress half because the series addresses how she returns after a major event in her story.
In a May 2025 interview, StarWars.com explains that Christie Golden’s canon novel Star Wars: Dark Disciple was based on eight unreleased Clone Wars episodes, followed Ventress and Quinlan Vos, and ended with Ventress sacrificing herself. The interview says Tales of the Underworld helps explain her return; it does not say the new series adapts the novel in full. Ventress also appeared in Season 3 of The Bad Batch before this anthology.

Read Dark Disciple if you want the fuller earlier Ventress story; treat it as optional companion context, not homework. If you have not encountered her before, the series premise still gives you the immediate situation, but the significance of her return may be less apparent.
