When does Star Wars: Starfighter come out?

Is it a sequel, and what is the story?
Lucasfilm calls Starfighter an all-new standalone adventure, not a direct sequel. Its April 2025 announcement placed the story approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker; the studio has described the setting as a period not previously explored in Star Wars.
The official synopsis offers a deliberately limited setup: a cynical rogue, confronted by his past, is drawn into a dangerous journey across the galaxy. That establishes the broad premise, not the film’s full plot. Lucasfilm has not confirmed further story details in the cited announcements.

Who is Ryan Gosling playing?
Gosling stars as Kade Auberon. In an official StarWars.com feature published August 15, 2026, Gosling described the character this way: “Kade is a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.” The line hints at a connection between Kade and the craft, but does not explain the circumstances or reveal more of the plot. Will Starfighter be shown in IMAX 70mm?
Yes. Lucasfilm says the film was shot for IMAX using IMAX-certified cameras and converted to IMAX 70mm prints for a select number of IMAX film locations. This is a limited-location presentation, not a confirmation that every IMAX theater will show a 70mm print.
