Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord at Star Wars Celebration Japan during a panel marking 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. Surprise guest Sam Witwer revealed he would return as Maul. The animated series later premiered on Disney+ on April 6, 2026; Lucasfilm had announced before the premiere that a second season was in the works.
What Lucasfilm announced at Star Wars Celebration
At Star Wars Celebration Japan, Lucasfilm used its Animation 20th anniversary panel to unveil the new series. StarWars.com’s announcement identified Witwer, who previously voiced Maul in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, as the star of the series. At the time, the show was in production and planned for a 2026 Disney+ debut; its eventual premiere date was April 6, 2026.
What the series is about
The story picks up after The Clone Wars, in the period following the formation of the Galactic Empire. Maul tries to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire and crosses paths with Devon Izara, a disillusioned Jedi Padawan who may become the apprentice he wants. Disney+ places the story after The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, and years before Star Wars Rebels. Much of it unfolds on Janix, a newly introduced planet. Release date, episodes, and where to watch
Season 1 premiered on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with two episodes. Lucasfilm’s trailer announcement said two episodes would arrive each week, ending with the finale on Star Wars Day, May 4, 2026. Disney+ lists 10 episodes in its UK guide; episode counts and catalog details may vary by territory. Disney identifies Disney+ as the series’ exclusive streaming destination, but local availability and subscription requirements depend on the viewer’s region.

Season 2 status
On April 2, 2026, before Season 1 premiered, Lucasfilm announced that Season 2 was in the works. The announcement did not provide a release date, so no Season 2 premiere date is established by that statement. StarWars.com’s Season 2 announcement also named additional cast members.
Cast and creative team
Sam Witwer voices Maul. The principal cast also includes Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as Captain Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots. Other announced cast members are Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David W. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, and Steve Blum as Icarus.

Dave Filoni created the series, based on Star Wars and characters created by George Lucas. Filoni and Matt Michnovetz developed it, and Brad Rau is supervising director. Executive producers are Filoni, Athena Yvette Portillo, Michnovetz, Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes; Alex Spotswood is co-executive producer. Official Devon Izara lightsaber collectible
Lucasfilm announced a Devon Izara Limited Edition Legacy Lightsaber on March 26, 2026. The collectible hilt includes lightsaber sound effects and illuminates an attachable blue blade; the package includes a themed box, lithograph, and numbered insert card. The announcement described the edition as limited to 3,000 units globally and said it would launch April 6, 2026, through DisneyStore.com, Walt Disney World Resort, and Disneyland Resort. Those are the original launch details, not confirmation of current stock. Lucasfilm’s product announcement does not establish Amazon availability.

What Lucasfilm reported about early viewership
In an April 15, 2026 report, StarWars.com said the first episode had reached 4.1 million global views after seven days of streaming on Disney+. The same dated article reported a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score at that time. Both are historical figures reported by Lucasfilm, not current audience totals or a guarantee of the series’ present rating. In that article, Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni said: “I’m very proud of our team as they continue to challenge themselves and raise the bar on our animated shows,” says Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni. “They’ve done a fantastic job delivering something new and exciting with this series and we are all really happy that fans are enjoying it.” StarWars.com published the figures and quote on April 15, 2026.
