Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player, narrative-driven action RPG from Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games. Announced at The Game Awards 2025, it is described as a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), not a direct sequel. Casey Hudson, who helped shape the original game’s legacy, is directing the project. The official announcement says development is in its early stages for PC and consoles, without giving a release date or naming specific consoles.
What is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic?
Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards 2025. The studios describe it as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG about a Force user in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. The first trailer accompanied the announcement.
The game’s announced creative aims include consequential choices leading toward light or darkness, narrative depth, memorable characters and combat. Those are descriptions of the studios’ intentions; the announcement does not establish detailed gameplay systems or demonstrate how those choices work in play. Arcanaut’s announcement and StarWars.com’s interview provide the official details.
Is it a KOTOR sequel?
No direct sequel or continuation has been announced. Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly says the game has an all-new story and new characters, while describing it as a spiritual successor built in the tradition of KOTOR. That points to a creative connection and legacy, not confirmed continuity with KOTOR’s plot or characters.
