“Transference,” Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 17, makes its shooting investigation personal when the suspect’s connection to Kevin Atwater and Val Soto puts pressure on their relationship. The episode’s strength, as Lara Rosales argues in her April 3, 2025, Tell-Tale TV review, is that it asks Atwater to respond not only as a police officer protecting Val, but as a person who has to say what he wants from her. “The Show Does Right by Atwater” is this review’s editorial angle; “Transference” is the episode’s listed title.

The episode aired April 2, 2025. Apple TV lists a 40-minute runtime and a TV-14 rating; Rotten Tomatoes uses the more specific TV-14 (L|V) label. Rotten Tomatoes and Apple TV identify it as S12E17.

How the case tests Atwater and Val

The episode’s premise links the search for a shooting suspect to Atwater and Val, turning a police investigation into a test of how they handle danger and intimacy at the same time. The listing describes the case as uncovering a surprising personal connection and raising questions about their relationship status. That setup gives Atwater’s professional instincts a real purpose, but also makes them an incomplete answer: concern for Val’s safety cannot settle what either of them wants from the relationship.

Rosales’s reading is that Atwater initially approaches the threat through his job. His instinct to protect Val is understandable, yet it lets him keep the emotional question at a distance. The meaningful shift comes when he considers their relationship personally, rather than treating it only as another situation to manage as an officer. That distinction is why the episode’s relationship plot matters to his character, rather than functioning as a distraction from the case.

#1 Best Overall

Atwater’s development is about speaking for himself

Atwater is often positioned as someone who looks out for other people. Here, the question is whether he can also name his own needs. The episode puts pressure on the limits of a casual, compartmentalized arrangement: care and protectiveness are already present, so pretending the relationship has no emotional stakes becomes harder to sustain.

Rosales sees the story moving toward honesty and middle ground. Atwater and Val choose to stay together, but that choice is a step toward clarity, not proof that every disagreement or uncertainty has disappeared. The episode leaves room for the pair to work out what staying together means in practice. That restraint makes the development more credible than a sudden, tidy resolution would be.

Rank #2

Burgess gives the story its clearest support

Burgess’s role is small in comparison with the central relationship, but important to its framing. In Rosales’s account, she asks Atwater what he wants and reminds him that he has a say in the relationship. That counsel shifts the focus from Atwater’s responsibilities toward Val to the choices he is allowed to make for himself.

It also gives the episode an ensemble dimension. Burgess’s conversation reflects the trust and accountability in her friendship with Atwater: she can challenge him without taking the decision out of his hands. Her presence helps make the episode’s character work feel rooted in the larger team rather than isolated from it.

What the episode leaves open

Rosales also notes that Torres is absent from the case and reads a hint of a possible continuation of his personal arc. That is an interpretive observation, not a confirmed promise of what a later episode will do. It remains a secondary thread beside the main focus on Atwater, Val, and the choices their relationship requires.
