Reports in June 2024 said that an old clip from a conversation with Trevor Noah had resurfaced during backlash to the series and was being presented out of context.
What was the quote actually about?
GameSpot and ComicBook.com identify the viral remark as coming from a 2018 conversation with Trevor Noah about The Hate U Give. The film was based on Angie Thomas’s novel. The reports describe the old interview as the source of the clip, rather than an interview about The Acolyte. GameSpot’s 2024 report and ComicBook.com’s report both distinguish the 2018 discussion from the later Star Wars controversy.

The full original interview video or transcript is not available here for independent verification. That means the attribution and context can be stated as reported by those outlets, but the viral fragment should not be treated as a complete or independently checked transcript of Stenberg’s words.
How did it become linked to The Acolyte?
In June 2024, as The Acolyte faced online backlash, the older clip resurfaced and was circulated as if Stenberg were describing the Star Wars show. The reporting identifies this as a misattribution; it does not establish who first made or spread that connection.

A June 6, 2024 transcript of The Ben Shapiro Show provides one documented instance of the false attribution. It shows that the claim was repeated, not where it originated.

On June 19–21, 2024, Stenberg posted a song responding to the backlash and revisiting the earlier interview. GameSpot reproduced lyrics in which she recalls wanting the takeaway to be empathy, including the words “I say empathy.” This is her later account of the 2018 conversation as reported by GameSpot; it is not a verified verbatim line from the original interview.
The distinction matters: neither the resurfaced fragment nor the later song makes the 2018 remark a statement about The Acolyte. For background on the work that was actually under discussion, The Hate U Give is the film adapted from Angie Thomas’s novel.
