Which characters are new in season 5?
Rayner: Discovery’s new first officer
Rennie’s Rayner is a Kellerun Starfleet captain who becomes Discovery’s first officer. The official preview describes him as gruff and smart, committed to command structure and the mission, but uncomfortable with collaboration. Executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise says Rayner pushes Burnham and helps reveal new sides of her. Unlike the season’s two new antagonists, Rayner is a series regular.

L’ak and Moll: recurring rivals
Toufexis plays L’ak and Harlow plays Moll. Paradise characterizes the pair as a formidable “Bonnie and Clyde” unit: they are a couple, and the story explores their motivations and relationship rather than treating them as simple villains. They are recurring guest characters, not listed as series regulars.
Martin-Green described the season’s intended tone as adventurous and fun, likening it to an “Indiana Jones season.” That sense of a galaxy-spanning adventure fits the season’s central race for a long-hidden prize.
