STANS is an authorized, Eminem-produced documentary that examines the pull of celebrity by looking at the people who feel closest to the star. Directed by Steven Leckart, it uses selected fans’ stories, archival material, stylized recreations and interviews—including Eminem’s—to explore where personal connection ends and troubling fixation may begin. Its fan-centered approach makes for a revealing angle on fame, though the film’s treatment of obsession is open to question.
What is STANS about?
STANS is less a complete Eminem biography than a portrait of his career refracted through fandom. The official synopsis describes real-life fans whose personal connections to the rapper echo themes in his lyrics, and frames the film around the tension between a private artist and a vast public persona. It combines intimate interviews with archival footage and stylized recreations. Eminem is part of the film, but the fans are its organizing perspective.
That choice grew from the song “Stan,” released in 2000 and written from the viewpoint of an increasingly consumed fan. In a Moviefone interview, director Steven Leckart explained: “They didn’t want to just look at his career and put him in a chair and tell his whole story.” He said the team instead turned the camera toward the fans, while working to balance their perspective with Eminem’s. Leckart also described the film’s point of view through a lyric from the song: “I’m just like you.”
The title’s association with the song has since become part of everyday language: Eminem’s official announcement says “stan” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. That cultural afterlife helps explain why the film’s subject is larger than one artist’s fan base: it is also about the language people use for intense allegiance to a public figure.

Does the documentary make a dark case about fandom?
The film’s darker implications come from the gap between a fan’s sense of intimacy and the reality of the relationship. A song, public persona or interview can feel personally meaningful; that feeling does not mean the artist knows the listener. STANS brings that tension into focus by placing fans’ experiences alongside Eminem’s public image and work.
Whether it fully interrogates the risks of that attachment is less settled. Rotten Tomatoes reproduces sharply different critical readings: one characterizes the film as both tribute and cautionary tale, while another argues that its portrait of eccentric fans does not sufficiently engage with the psychology behind obsession. That disagreement points to the film’s central limitation as well as its subject. Stories of devotion can be vivid and affecting, but they do not automatically explain the forces that make devotion harmful—or the boundary between harmless identification and destructive fixation.

So “dark look” is a reasonable way to describe the questions the documentary raises, not an official genre label or a claim that critics agree on its conclusions. The film offers material for thinking about fame, identity and attachment; viewers may differ on whether it pushes far enough beyond the spectacle of extreme fandom.
How does STANS compare with a conventional music biography?
A traditional career retrospective usually organizes its story around an artist’s timeline, milestones and collaborators. Leckart’s account makes clear that this was not the intended structure here. The film uses Eminem’s career as context for a focused examination of the audience relationship built around it. That gives fans room to describe what the music means in their lives, but it also means the documentary should not be treated as a comprehensive account of Eminem’s life or every period of his career.

The official announcement situates that career at considerable scale, reporting more than 164 million albums sold, more than 110 billion global streams, 15 GRAMMY Awards and one Academy Award. It also says Eminem sold 32.2 million albums in the United States during the 2000s, citing Nielsen SoundScan for the top-selling-artist ranking. These are figures published by Eminem’s official site in 2025, rather than independently audited totals established here; they provide promotional context for the reach of the public persona the film examines.

STANS is most compelling as a deliberate change of perspective: instead of asking only how Eminem became famous, it asks what that fame feels like from the audience’s side. Its fan stories and the artist’s presence create a useful frame for examining identification and distance. The film’s critical value depends on how much weight viewers think it gives the darker psychology behind its most intense examples of fandom.
