The Shining is No. 10 in Rotten Tomatoes’ Stanley Kubrick feature-film ranking, in a guide updated December 15, 2025. The guide displays an 84% Tomatometer score for the 1980 film. Its numbered sequence is not strictly ordered by the percentages shown, so the ranking below preserves Rotten Tomatoes’ published order rather than re-sorting the titles by score.
Rotten Tomatoes’ Kubrick ranking, in its published order
The figures below are the Tomatometer percentages displayed in Rotten Tomatoes’ guide updated December 15, 2025. They are reproduced alongside the guide’s numbering; the order is not a descending-score ranking.
- Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) — 98% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Paths of Glory (1957) — 96% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- The Killing (1956) — 96% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Spartacus (1960) — 93% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) — 90% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Lolita (1962) — 89% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Full Metal Jacket (1987) — 89% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Barry Lyndon (1975) — 78% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- A Clockwork Orange (1971) — 86% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- The Shining (1980) — 84% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Eyes Wide Shut (1999) — 76% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Killer’s Kiss (1955) — 83% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
- Fear and Desire (1953) — 70% (Rotten Tomatoes, 2025).
The placement of Barry Lyndon at No. 8 with 78%, ahead of A Clockwork Orange at No. 9 with 86%, makes the mismatch plain. The same pattern appears near the bottom: Eyes Wide Shut is No. 11 at 76%, followed by Killer’s Kiss at No. 12 with 83%. Rotten Tomatoes provides no explanation for this sequence in the guide, so its positions should not be presented as a simple score sort.
What The Shining’s Tomatometer score means
Rotten Tomatoes’ film page showed The Shining at 84% from 114 reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. The rating and review count are a dated snapshot and may change. Rotten Tomatoes describes the Tomatometer as the share of approved critics whose reviews are positive. It is not an average star rating, an audience score, or an objective measurement of artistic quality.

Why The Shining stands out in the guide
Rotten Tomatoes lists The Shining as a 1980 horror, mystery, and thriller directed by Stanley Kubrick, with a runtime of 2 hours 23 minutes. Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers are among the cast; Warner Bros. Pictures is listed as distributor.

The film follows Jack Torrance, who takes a winter caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel with his wife Wendy and son Danny. Danny’s psychic premonitions grow more disturbing as Jack unravels. The film adapts Stephen King’s novel, and Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes it as a departure from the book: “Though it deviates from Stephen King’s novel, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is a chilling, often baroque journey into madness — exemplified by an unforgettable turn from Jack Nicholson.” This is Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus statement, not a quotation from an individual critic.
How complete is the “all Kubrick movies” list?
The 2025 guide presents itself as covering all Kubrick movies, but its ranking contains 13 feature films. Rotten Tomatoes’ separate Stanley Kubrick filmography also lists short films, including The Seafarers, Day of the Fight, and Flying Padre. The guide is therefore best understood as a ranking of the 13 features it includes, not a complete inventory of every film format associated with Kubrick.
