Stan Lee died on November 12, 2018, aged 95. Chris Evans, who played Captain America, called him irreplaceable; Robert Downey Jr. later joined his fellow original Avengers in a group tribute. The available reporting does not verify a specific statement from Chris Pratt, so none is attributed to him here.
When did Stan Lee die?
Lee died on November 12, 2018, at age 95, Reuters reported. He helped shape Marvel’s rise through characters created in collaboration with artists including Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. His legacy is substantial, but it should not be told as the work of one person alone: the division of credit under Marvel’s collaborative “Marvel Method” has also been debated.
What did Chris Evans say about Stan Lee?
Evans, who portrayed Captain America in Marvel films, wrote: “There will never be another Stan Lee.” He also reflected on the lasting effect of Lee’s work: “For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy.” Reuters reported both remarks on November 12, 2018: Reuters’ report on Lee’s death and tributes.
What did Robert Downey Jr. say?
Downey Jr. joined Evans and fellow original Avengers Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth in a later group tribute to Lee. Cadena SER reported the tribute on November 16, 2018, reproducing its wording in Spanish. Because the source provides Spanish text rather than a verified English original, it is best described as a group message rather than quoted as an English verbatim statement: Cadena SER’s report on the Avengers’ tribute.

Lee’s influence—and the collaborators behind it
Lee was central to Marvel’s public story, but Reuters also noted his creative partnerships with artists such as Kirby and Steve Ditko, as well as criticism over how credit was assigned under Marvel’s production system. Remembering Lee’s influence therefore need not erase the collaborators whose work helped bring Marvel characters to life.
