Stage right is the actor’s right when facing the audience; stage left is the actor’s left. From your seat, those sides appear reversed. There is no universally best seat in the house: the right choice depends on the venue, production, sightline, access needs, and the view and comfort you prefer.
Stage right and stage left: whose perspective?
Stage directions are given from the performer’s viewpoint. Imagine standing on stage and looking out at the audience: your right is stage right, and your left is stage left. From the audience’s viewpoint, stage right is on your left and stage left is on your right.
“House right” and “house left” use the audience’s perspective. Facing the stage from your seat, house right is on your right—opposite stage right.
The National Park Service offers a broad theatrical mnemonic: “In the theater, up is back, down is front, in is down, out is up, left is right, and right is left.” The left-and-right part makes sense when you keep the viewpoint in mind: stage directions use the actor’s perspective, while house directions use the audience’s. What makes a seat good?
A sightline is the view from a particular seat to the stage; an obstruction or angle can hide part of the action. Pearson’s staging glossary describes sightlines as “imaginary lines of sight that determine what areas of the stage are visible to the audience from any given seat in the house.” A seat’s label or section alone cannot tell you exactly what you will see.

- View: Check whether the seat is marked restricted view and whether a rail, pillar, side angle, or stage extension might block part of the performance.
- Distance and angle: A closer seat can make performers and details easier to see; a more distant or central seat may give you a broader view. Use the venue’s seat map or view tool to judge the trade-off.
- Price and value: Venues may price seats differently based on position or restrictions. Decide what view limitations, if any, are worth the savings to you.
- Access and comfort: Check step-free routes, seat location, legroom, and any other requirements directly with the venue.
- Production and building: Staging, set design, and the auditorium’s layout can change what a seat sees. A view that works for one production may not work the same way for another.
Why there is no single “best seat in the house”
Seat recommendations are specific to an auditorium and often to a particular production. The Lyceum’s seating guidance for The Lion King recommends central Stalls seats around one-third of the way back and describes central, forward Royal Circle seats as desirable. Theatre Royal Bath identifies middle Royal Circle seats as its best seats. Those are recommendations from those venues, not a general rule for every theater.
Other venue guidance reinforces the need to check the actual seat. Apollo Victoria’s advice is tied to its auditorium and Wicked; Theatre Royal Bath notes that building design and staging can affect restricted views. Seat conditions and labels can therefore differ from one venue or production to another.

How to check a seat before booking
- Open the venue’s current seating plan for the performance you plan to attend. Confirm the auditorium and production, rather than relying on a general seating chart.
- Look for restricted-view notes and identify the seats or areas they apply to. Read the venue’s explanation of any limitation.
- Use available seat-view tools, such as a virtual tour or view-from-seat feature, to assess the angle and distance where offered.
- Contact the box office if you have a particular sightline, access, or comfort requirement. The Gorleston Pavilion specifically advises contacting its box office about access and sightline needs.
Official venue guidance is useful for its own theater and the production it describes. It is not a guarantee that a similarly named section elsewhere will offer the same view.
