If SRS reports that publishing to YouTube failed, first identify which connection is broken: the encoder-to-SRS input, SRS itself or its forwarding process, or the SRS-to-YouTube output. A successful stream into SRS does not prove that YouTube is receiving it. Then check the current Live Control Room RTMPS URL and stream key, the TLS connection and port, and the health of the encoder and outbound network.
Find the failing hop before changing settings
Trace the stream from its source to YouTube. Record the exact error from SRS and the encoder, whether SRS receives the incoming stream, and what YouTube Live Control Room reports. This separates an ingress problem from an SRS process or forwarding problem and from a YouTube egress failure.
- Check the encoder-to-SRS input. Confirm that the encoder is publishing to the intended SRS address and stream, and that SRS receives it.
- Check SRS. Confirm the process is running and inspect its logs for the time of the failure. SRS’s older v3 wiki illustrates checking process status and following
./objs/srs.log; that path and its commands are not guaranteed to apply to every installation or current SRS version. See the SRS v3 Linux service wiki. - Check the YouTube publishing leg. Find the SRS forward/publish configuration or the separate client that sends the stream to YouTube. Verify its destination, credentials, and logs. SRS’s local RTMP publish example demonstrates an incoming publish; it does not configure automatic forwarding to YouTube. See the SRS v7 RTMP documentation.
For a support request, capture the installed SRS version, the publishing client and version, relevant error lines with secrets removed, YouTube’s status, and which of these stages succeeds. There is no single cross-version SRS error-code map that identifies every YouTube publish failure.
Check the YouTube URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, select the intended live stream and copy its current server URL and stream key into the publisher responsible for YouTube egress. YouTube’s instructions say the ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default; reveal and use its RTMPS URL where appropriate. A URL or key saved for another event, or an old key left in the forwarding configuration, can make the publisher fail to start. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

- Open the settings for the specific stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the current RTMPS server URL and the key for that stream.
- Update the SRS forwarding client or other publisher that sends to YouTube, then retry and check the resulting status and logs.
If a third-party encoder reports that it cannot start, YouTube recommends refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or tickets. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the publisher.
Fix RTMPS, TLS, port, and SNI errors
For YouTube RTMPS, check the full destination rather than only the key. The protocol must be rtmps, the YouTube ingestion hostname and application path must be valid, and the connection must use port 443. TLS must actually be negotiated; sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint can time out. Google’s protocol guidance also explains that the hostname is needed for authentication through Server Name Indication (SNI) during the TLS handshake. See Google for Developers’ RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- SSL certificate error: confirm that both the protocol and server use RTMPS, and try port 443 if the error persists, as YouTube Help advises. A certificate error can also mean the client reached a server expecting RTMP rather than the intended RTMPS service.
- Connection timeout: verify that the client is using TLS, not cleartext RTMP, and that the port is 443. If the URL and port are correct, inspect TLS diagnostics and confirm the client sends the correct hostname through SNI.
- Local SRS RTMPS listener: check its own listener and certificate/key configuration separately. A TLS certificate for your SRS server does not configure or validate the separate TLS connection from SRS to YouTube. SRS documents its RTMPS settings in the v7 RTMP guide.
YouTube’s instruction is explicit: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” See YouTube Help.
Check the encoder and media health
If the publishing connection is established but the stream is missing, unstable, or poor in quality, distinguish an encoding problem from a network problem before changing the SRS forwarding settings.

- Make sure the encoder supports RTMPS and update it to its newest available version. YouTube says a built-in YouTube RTMPS preset may be available.
- Inspect the encoder’s preview, reported errors, CPU load, and a local recording or archive. If the local output is already faulty, troubleshoot the encoder or source before the YouTube connection.
- If the local stream looks healthy, test outbound Internet connectivity from the machine or server responsible for YouTube publishing. If that test shows a problem, investigate the network path and involve the ISP as appropriate.
- When asking for help, identify the encoder or transcoder and its version. SRS documentation names FFmpeg and OBS as RTMP publishers, but clients can differ in their RTMPS and media behavior.
YouTube’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not set one universal bandwidth threshold for this publishing failure. Do not treat its example about viewer-side bandwidth as an upload-speed requirement for an SRS publisher. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Use viewer reports only after YouTube receives the stream
If YouTube is already receiving the stream and viewers report playback trouble, compare where the problem occurs. A single affected viewer, or several viewers sharing one network, points toward that viewer or network. Reports from viewers on different networks can indicate a problem with the encoder or stream. This comparison helps with playback diagnosis; it does not establish that an SRS-to-YouTube connection succeeded or explain an SRS publish error. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide.

Common symptoms and the next check
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| No stream arrives at SRS | Check the encoder’s destination and credentials, then confirm the SRS process and logs. |
| Stream arrives at SRS, but YouTube sees nothing | Inspect the separate forwarding/publishing leg, its current YouTube URL and key, and its logs. |
| “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out” | Verify the RTMPS URL, port 443, TLS rather than cleartext RTMP, outbound connectivity, and SNI if the URL and port are correct. |
| “The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate” | Check the protocol and server hostname, use the RTMPS endpoint, and try port 443. Confirm which server’s certificate is being reported. |
| Publisher cannot start | Refresh the key for the intended stream in Live Control Room, update the publisher, and verify the event URL. |
| YouTube receives a stream, but its video or audio is poor | Inspect the local preview, encoder errors and CPU load, and a local recording; test outbound connectivity if local output is healthy. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than operate an SRS relay, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube only, not a live camera input.
