Spoilers for Squid Game Seasons 1–3. Season 2’s Player 001, introduced to Gi-hun as Oh Young-il, is actually Hwang In-ho—the Front Man. He joins the game under a false identity, earns Gi-hun’s trust, and reveals his betrayal in the finale by killing Jung-bae. Viewers know who Young-il is before Gi-hun does.
Who is Player 001 in Squid Game Season 2?
Player 001 is Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, using the name Oh Young-il while competing alongside Gi-hun. Young-il is not a new identity for an ordinary contestant: In-ho conceals who he is and why he has entered the game while getting close to Gi-hun. The Season 2 ending explanation from Netflix Tudum and the Korean Film Council’s account of the twist describe the identity reveal and his effort to gain Gi-hun’s trust.
That makes the reveal a case of dramatic irony: by the end of Season 2, viewers know Young-il is the Front Man, while Gi-hun still believes he has been fighting beside an ally. Netflix’s interview with Lee Byung-hun about the role distinguishes the three facets he plays—Young-il, In-ho, and the Front Man. Lee said, “Having to give different nuances to each of these three aspects was the most challenging — as well as the most fun — for me as an actor.”
Why does the Front Man enter the game as Young-il?
In-ho enters the competition under cover, close enough to Gi-hun to observe him and shape his experience from inside the group. The Korean Film Council describes him concealing his identity and motives as he earns Gi-hun’s trust and forms a group with like-minded players. The plot therefore lets In-ho operate both as a supposed teammate and as the hidden authority behind the game. Reading his closeness to Gi-hun as a way to monitor and manipulate him is a reasonable interpretation of the setup, rather than a separately confirmed statement about every motive.

How does the disguise end?
In the Season 2 finale, Gi-hun’s revolt fails. In-ho returns to his role as the Front Man and kills Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun. He does not tell Gi-hun that the teammate he knew as Young-il was the masked leader. The audience sees the betrayal and understands the identity behind it; Gi-hun is left grieving Jung-bae without knowing who his supposed ally really was.

The repeated Player 001 number invites a comparison, but the men and their roles are different. Netflix’s Season 2 explainer recalls Il-nam’s earlier place as Gi-hun’s Player 001 ally; Young-il’s number is a new cover for a different kind of deception.

Does Gi-hun learn that Young-il is the Front Man?
Not by the end of Season 2. The finale gives viewers the answer while Gi-hun still sees Young-il as a fellow contestant. That gap in knowledge is central to why Jung-bae’s death lands as a betrayal: viewers know the killer’s connection to Gi-hun, but Gi-hun does not.
Post-Season 2 context: Gi-hun eventually learns the truth in Season 3. Netflix’s Season 3 ending explanation says he sees the Front Man remove his mask and recognizes him as the player he knew as Young-il.
