Spoiler-light review. Squid Game returns with a more determined Gi-hun and a fresh set of deadly contests, but much of its seven-episode season builds toward the brutal spectacle it promises. The result is gripping in flashes and compelling in its new direction, though the familiar format and delayed payoff blunt some of the shock that made the first season so potent.
What Season 2 is about
Season 2 premiered globally on Netflix on December 26, 2024, and consists of seven episodes. Netflix’s official season guide sets the story three years after Gi-hun wins the first competition. Rather than leave for the United States, he returns with a new purpose: find the people behind the games and try to stop them.
That change gives the sequel a different engine. Gi-hun is no longer simply a desperate contestant swept into an unknowable system. He enters the story with a plan and a determination shaped by what he has endured. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk described his pursuit as the season’s core story; Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, said the emphasis this time was on the character’s determination.
Lee returns alongside Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man and Wi Ha-jun as Hwang Jun-ho. They are joined by a substantial group of new players, whose competing needs and choices supply much of the season’s human tension.

The buildup is the season’s biggest trade-off
The most consequential choice is how long the season spends setting up Gi-hun’s effort before the deadly competition takes center stage. TIME’s review notes that two of the seven episodes pass before Gi-hun and Jun-ho reach the island, and finds the early stretch slow. TheWrap’s review, by contrast, describes the premiere as quickly advancing Gi-hun’s plan. Both observations can be true: the opening moves its pursuit forward, while the larger return to the games takes time.
That delay has a purpose. Gi-hun’s attempt to locate and confront the system gives the sequel a plot beyond repeating the first season’s contest. But the series also risks making viewers wait for the very spectacle its premise promises. When the games do arrive, the shift feels forceful; the route there can feel drawn out.

New games, familiar suspense
The first season’s central advantage was uncertainty: viewers and contestants alike were learning the rules and discovering what each round would demand. Season 2 cannot reproduce that ignorance. Its return to deadly games is familiar by design, and the known structure means a new round has to work harder to surprise.
TV Guide’s review argues that the format’s return diminishes some of the original surprise, while still praising the new games, twists, and contenders. TIME also finds the recurring structure familiar. The season’s answer is to vary the people and stakes around the contests, rather than pretend the audience has never seen this world before. That helps, but it does not fully restore the first season’s unnerving sense of discovery.

The games remain a source of brutal spectacle, and TheWrap finds the season more brutal and entertaining. Yet graphic intensity and suspense are not the same thing: the violence can still land even when the format makes the outcome feel less mysterious. The season is strongest when a contest reveals something about its players, not merely when it raises the body count.
Gi-hun’s resolve sharpens the themes
Gi-hun’s changed outlook gives the story a clear emotional contrast with his earlier self. Lee said Season 1 left room for the character’s optimism and positive energy, while Season 2 focused on determination. Hwang put it more starkly in a Netflix Tudum interview: “There’s something inside him that has just been broken.” His resolve makes him more active, but it also gives the character a narrower emotional register than before.

The season continues to frame the games as an expression of a wider social order, not just a series of cruel puzzles. That political dimension remains pointed, and TV Guide calls its themes ominously relevant. At times, however, the arguments are repeated so emphatically that they can feel heavy-handed. The most effective moments let the players’ choices and the mechanics of the competition carry the critique, rather than spelling out every implication.

Without giving away the finale, the season ends on a cliffhanger rather than a self-contained resolution. TIME describes the ending as abrupt and the season as frustratingly unfinished. That assessment fits the structure: Season 2 develops a new conflict but leaves its central struggle for another chapter, so viewers seeking a complete arc should expect a continuation rather than a final payoff.

There is now a completed-series context. Netflix’s guide to the third and final season confirms that the story continued in 2025. That later release makes Season 2 easier to place as a middle chapter, although it does not make the finale feel more conclusive on its own.
Who should watch it?
- Watch if you want to see Gi-hun pursue the people behind the games, and you are willing to wait through setup for new rounds of brutal competition.
- Temper expectations if what you valued most in Season 1 was the shock of discovering the game’s rules alongside the contestants. Season 2 has new players and variations, but the basic premise is no longer a surprise.
- Know before you start that the series features deadly contests and graphic violence, and that this season’s ending leaves the story open.
For documentary-minded viewers, the season’s most interesting shift is from survival inside a closed system to an effort to investigate and resist that system. Its tension comes less from discovering what the games are than from watching whether Gi-hun’s new purpose can change anything. That ambition gives Season 2 a reason to exist; its extended buildup and unfinished ending keep it from feeling as complete as it could.
