| Arena round | Mingle | Rapid coalition-building | Netflix reports that 100 participants remain |
Every game is built around rules that can be explained quickly. Creator-director Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “The games had to be really simple. The penalty for the loser also had to be immediate and self-explanatory.”
The Recruiter’s three opening tests
Bread and Lottery
The Recruiter buys 100 buns and 100 scratch-off lottery tickets, then offers 100 unhoused people a mutually exclusive choice: take bread to eat or take a lottery ticket. People who choose a ticket receive a coin temporarily. The unwanted bread is crushed underfoot.
There is no complicated rule to learn. The cruelty comes from the choice itself: certain, immediate food or a tiny chance at a different future. The test establishes the season’s interest in whether people make decisions from present necessity or hope of a spectacular payoff.

Rock Paper Scissors Minus One
Each player makes rock, paper or scissors with both hands. They then remove one hand, leaving the other hand to determine the round under the normal rules. The loser is sent to Russian Roulette.
The Recruiter later loads five of the revolver’s six chambers. Mr. Kim disqualifies himself by refusing to remove one of his hands, showing how a simple rule can become coercive when the alternative is death.
Russian Roulette
The Recruiter uses two different versions of the game. In the first, he resets the cylinder after every draw, giving each trigger pull a five-in-six survival chance. The apparent randomness is still terrifying, but the odds do not accumulate across pulls because the chamber is reset.
When he plays against Gi-hun, he spins the cylinder once and does not reset it. The danger therefore increases with each empty pull, and the gun must fire by the sixth draw. Gi-hun survives the penultimate pull. The Recruiter accepts the final bullet and dies.

Red Light, Green Light
The arena’s first returning game uses the same basic rule as Season 1. Players may move while Young-hee calls “Green light,” but must freeze when she calls “Red light.” Any detected movement means elimination.
Gi-hun’s prior experience changes the group’s chances. He coaches players to control their breathing and stop completely, rather than leaving them to discover the timing through panic. Netflix reports 91 eliminations in Season 2, compared with 255 in Season 1.
Six-Legged Pentathlon
Five-person teams are tied together and have five minutes to complete a relay of five Korean playground challenges. The team advances only when the current player finishes their task; a mistake costs time for everyone attached to the team.
Ddakji
The player throws a folded paper square at an opponent’s square and must flip it over. This is the same basic paper-tile skill associated with the Recruiter’s recruitment game.

Flying Stone
The player throws one stone to knock over another. A miss forces the whole team to retrieve the stone and return before trying again.
Gong-gi
The player tosses and catches five small pieces through progressively harder stages. The sequence ends with a back-of-the-hand catch, making accuracy and rhythm more important than raw speed.
Spinning Top
The player wraps the cord around the top, holds the complete setup and throws it so the top spins. A failed throw means retrieving it and restarting.
Jegi
The player kicks the shuttlecock-like jegi five consecutive times. Dropping the sequence prevents the relay from moving on.

The challenge was inspired by Korean elementary-school sports days. Netflix reports that 111 players are eliminated in this round, leaving 255. The game is not simply five individual contests: a fast player cannot compensate indefinitely for a teammate who cannot complete a task, so team selection and encouragement matter as much as technique.
Mingle
Mingle takes place on a spinning carousel surrounded by numbered doors. When the carousel stops, a number is announced. Players must form a room group containing exactly that many people and enter together. A group with too many or too few members fails, and people outside rooms are eliminated. Dead players cannot be counted to reach the required number.
The carousel creates only seconds for negotiation. Players must decide whom to trust, whom to abandon and whether a proposed group actually has the announced number before a door closes. Netflix reports that only 100 participants remain after Mingle.
Production designer Chae Kyoung-sun says the set used a practical spinning orange platform, colorful doors and minimal computer-generated imagery. Hwang has described Mingle as a childhood game in which forming random groups may require tearing someone away from one alliance and leaving someone else behind.

- Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
- Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
- Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
- Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
- DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
Who survives the games?
The season does not provide a complete named survivor list for every round, but the confirmed outcomes are clear:
- Recruiter’s tests: Gi-hun survives the final Russian Roulette duel. The Recruiter dies after taking the last bullet. Mr. Kim refuses the hand-removal rule in Rock Paper Scissors Minus One and is disqualified from that contest; his later fate is not established here.
- Red Light, Green Light: Gi-hun survives and uses his knowledge of the game to coach other players. The round eliminates 91 people.
- Six-Legged Pentathlon: The surviving teams are not identified by a complete roster in the available official account. The round leaves 255 players after 111 eliminations.
- Mingle: The round reduces the field to 100 participants. Gi-hun and the disguised Front Man, Player 001/Young-il, continue beyond it.
Voting turns survival into a political choice
After each game, the remaining players vote on whether to continue or quit and divide the accumulated jackpot. In the dormitory, an X/O line makes the choice visible: one side represents continuing, the other leaving. Netflix’s ending explainer says only 182 players voted to leave in the first vote.
This mechanism changes the games’ meaning. The players are not only trying to survive a rule; they are repeatedly deciding whether the system should continue operating at all. The Six-Legged Pentathlon rewards cooperation, while Mingle rapidly fractures alliances. The vote makes that conflict explicit between rounds.
Why the Front Man enters as Player 001
The Front Man secretly joins the contestants under the name Young-il and the number 001. His presence turns the games into an argument with Gi-hun rather than a simple contest between contestant and organizers.

Gi-hun believes people can change and that collective action can stop the cycle. The Front Man believes there is “absolutely no hope for the world or humanity,” as Lee Byung-hun explains the character’s position. Their opposing beliefs shape every alliance and the eventual revolt.
What happens at the end of Season 2?
Gi-hun’s revolt against the game’s operation fails. During the collapse of the uprising, the Front Man reveals the consequences of his position by killing Jung-bae. The season ends with Gi-hun’s attempt to prove that people can choose solidarity defeated, while the Front Man’s hopeless worldview appears to have won the immediate confrontation.
Netflix says Season 2 debuted in December 2024 and reached 192.6 million views, making it the third-biggest season of a Netflix television show at the time of its ending explainer.
