Squid Game Season 2 is worth watching for its tense challenges, distinctive visual style, committed performances, and unsettling moral questions. It also has real drawbacks: it takes a while to get to the games, some of the competition feels familiar, and the finale leaves major story threads unresolved. Here are 10 things that work and three that don’t, based on the season’s story and published reviews—not a recovered list from an article with the same original title.
What Season 2 is trying to do
Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456—Seong Gi-hun—abandons his plan to go to the United States and returns to the competition. This time, his aim is not simply to survive: he wants to find out who runs the games and why. Netflix’s synopsis sets the prize at 45.6 billion won; the season runs for seven episodes and brings back Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, and Wi Ha-jun as detective Hwang Jun-ho. Netflix’s season overview lays out the premise and cast.
That change gives the sequel a different dramatic engine. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said Gi-hun’s effort to learn who is behind the games and why they operate is the season’s core story. Lee Jung-jae described him as more determined, while Hwang said, “There’s something inside him that has just been broken.” In a Netflix interview published November 5, 2024, the creator and actor framed the return as a confrontation shaped by Gi-hun’s changed state, not just another contest for the prize.
10 things that work
1. The games are still nerve-racking
The basic stakes remain brutally effective: a challenge can turn deadly, and the contestants have little room to make a mistake. Knowing what the games can cost makes their return tense even when the format is familiar. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praised the season’s “absolutely diabolical challenges.” That consensus appears on Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 2 page.

2. Gi-hun’s goal changes the sequel’s focus
Gi-hun is back among the players, but the story is no longer only about whether he can win. His determination to identify and confront the people behind the competition gives the season a pursuit plot alongside its survival drama. That shift is central to the way Hwang and Lee describe the character and the season’s story in Netflix’s interview.
3. The moral outlook stays thorny
The series continues to make its audience weigh survival against solidarity, and self-interest against responsibility. Rotten Tomatoes called the season’s moral outlook “knotty,” while The Atlantic highlighted its questions about whether people can overcome cruelty, greed, and selfishness. The point is not that the season offers easy answers; its appeal is partly in how uncomfortable the choices remain. The Atlantic’s review discusses those questions.
4. The visual style remains distinctive
In TIME’s view, Squid Game remains one of television’s most aesthetically distinctive shows. Its stylized spaces and striking presentation help separate the series from a more conventional thriller. That is a critical judgment, rather than an objective ranking, but it identifies a clear part of the show’s continued appeal. TIME’s review also praises the acting.

5. The cast makes the drama land
TIME praises the season’s acting, giving the pressure and emotional conflict more weight than the games’ mechanics alone could provide. Returning performers also make the sequel’s personal stakes legible: Gi-hun’s determination is not an abstract mission but a change in a character viewers already know.
6. The ensemble reaches beyond Gi-hun
TIME points to better-developed female characters and the relationship between a mother and son as examples of the broader ensemble’s emotional range. Those connections offer points of investment beyond the central struggle between Gi-hun and the game’s organizers.
7. The sequel explores resistance, not just endurance
Because Gi-hun wants to discover who is responsible for the games, returning to the competition carries a question absent from a simple survival story: can someone inside this system understand or disrupt it? The ambition does not guarantee that every strand resolves, but it does give the season a reason to revisit the premise.

8. Familiar stakes still carry force
Season 1’s surprise cannot be repeated in the same way; viewers already understand that the games are lethal. But familiarity also has a benefit. The audience knows the consequences when a new challenge begins, so tension can come from anticipating how the contestants will respond rather than learning the rules from scratch.
9. The season keeps cruelty and selfishness in view
The series’ moral conflict extends beyond individual games. The Atlantic’s reading of the season emphasizes the possibility—or difficulty—of overcoming cruelty, greed, and selfishness. That keeps the violence connected to questions about human behavior instead of making the challenges the whole point.

Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus captures the balance: the return loses some surprise, but the challenges and moral complexity keep the season thrilling. Its listed Tomatometer score was 84% in the site’s roundup updated January 17, 2025. 3 things that don’t work as well
1. The opening is slow to reach the competition
TIME notes that two of the season’s seven episodes pass before Gi-hun gets back to the island. Some critics in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup also described the early stretch as slow or lethargic. The setup gives room to establish Gi-hun’s new mission, but viewers waiting for the contest itself may find the delay frustrating.
2. The games can feel like a replay
Once the competition resumes, TIME says the story risks settling into a “play, murder, rage, repeat” pattern. That is a review’s criticism, not a universal verdict: the familiar structure still creates suspense for some viewers, but it can make the sequel feel less surprising than the first season.
3. The ending leaves too much hanging
Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup includes critics who see the season as “part one” or as setup for what follows. The Atlantic reviewer likewise questioned whether the story had progressed after its cliffhanger. That choice may work if the finale is treated as a bridge to another installment, but it makes Season 2 less satisfying as a self-contained story. The same roundup notes criticism of unresolved strands; TIME also argues that some characters introduced early do not become especially important.
Is Squid Game Season 2 as good as Season 1?
It depends on what made the first season work for you. Season 2 retains the series’ visual identity, performances, dangerous challenges, and morally complicated outlook, while changing the focus through Gi-hun’s effort to confront the people behind the games. It has less surprise, takes longer to return to the island, and ends with more setup than resolution. If you want a satisfying standalone conclusion, the cliffhanger is a drawback; if you are drawn to the characters and the series’ moral conflicts, there is still plenty to engage with.
