But Netflix never officially announced the American project, and reports in August 2026 said its working-title project, Heckler, was no longer moving forward. Netflix has not confirmed that status.
Was Squid Game: America a remake or a new show?
Coverage characterized the proposed U.S. project as a spin-off in the Squid Game world rather than a remake of the Korean drama. That distinction is the basis for calling it a “whole new show,” but the phrase is editorial framing—not an official description of a confirmed series.
Netflix never officially announced an American adaptation. With no announcement establishing its format or story, details such as its plot, cast, release date, and final creative approach remain unconfirmed. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a reported American spin-off than as a Netflix series that was definitively developed or released.
Is the reported American project still happening?
On August 6, 2026, What’s on Netflix, citing The Playlist, reported that the working-title project Heckler was no longer moving forward. On August 9, Asia Business Daily reported that U.S. outlets said Netflix had halted the project, while noting that Netflix had never officially commented on an American adaptation. The outlet also disclosed that its translation used AI assistance.

What does this mean for the Korean series?
The original Korean scripted series has ended. Netflix Tudum identifies season three, episode six as its planned series finale and says there will be no season four. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Tudum, “I need to wrap up Gi-hun’s journey and convey a message to the audience right now.”

That conclusion applies to the scripted Korean series; it does not mean every project or franchise activity has ended.
How is Squid Game: The Challenge different?
Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition inspired by the scripted series, not the reported American scripted spin-off. Netflix’s official synopsis describes contestants taking on games for a prize. The format and relationship to the original are different:

Yes, at the franchise level. Netflix’s 2025 annual report refers to consumer products, live experiences, and planned spin-offs. Those broad statements indicate continued franchise activity, but they do not confirm that Squid Game: America or Heckler is in production.
