What Spotify launched in India
Spotify’s official announcement, dated February 26, 2019, said the service was available in India “today.” The launch brought both a free, advertising-supported service and paid Premium access, with apps and listening across multiple device types. The date is the official launch date; reports published on February 27 or 28 reflect publication timing rather than a different official launch.

Spotify offered new users a 30-day Premium trial, according to contemporary launch coverage. Trial terms are historical and should not be taken as current signup terms.
Why the free tier stood out
Free was not limited to shuffle-only listening on smartphones. At launch, Indian Spotify Free users could select and play songs on demand on mobile, while listening without a subscription fee and with ads. The announcement described the mobile control as a feature for smartphone users; it does not establish identical controls for every device or content type.

Free users could access Spotify playlists and its catalog subject to licensing and regional availability. It was not equivalent to Premium: the paid plan added ad-free listening, offline listening, improved sound quality and Spotify Connect, according to the launch release.

What ₹119—and $1.67—meant
The launch Premium price was ₹119 per month, as reported in the launch release. TechCrunch rendered that as approximately $1.67 at the time. Indian subscribers paid in rupees; the dollar amount was a contemporaneous conversion, not a fixed USD subscription price.

TechCrunch also reported prepaid options spanning daily, weekly, monthly, three-month, six-month and annual durations. Those were launch-era reports, not a promise that the same options would remain available. Spotify’s current India plan structure is different: an official pricing page surfaced for this article lists Premium Standard at ₹139 per month, annual prepaid at ₹1,390, Student at ₹69 per month and Platinum at ₹299 per month. Offers and eligibility may vary, so check Spotify’s India pricing page for the live terms. None of those later prices should be confused with the 2019 launch price.
How Spotify adapted discovery for India
The launch was presented as a localized service, not simply the addition of another country to Spotify’s map. Recommendations included Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, and the Home, Radio, Search and Daily Mix experiences were oriented toward Indian listening. The service also paired local programming with international playlists.

Spotify’s editorial examples included Indiestan, Rap 91, Namaste Love, Punjabi101 and Bollywood Butter. “Starring…” playlists connected discovery to popular Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and Punjabi actors. City playlists surfaced music trends in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai. Together, language, film culture, genre and city were discovery routes—not just translation choices.
Why India mattered to Spotify
India offered Spotify a large, mobile-first audience, varied local music cultures and a market where domestic listening could also travel internationally. Spotify’s launch materials highlighted interest in Indian artists beyond India, including Punjabi and indie music, as well as listening patterns that crossed borders.

The company said the India launch brought its footprint to 79 markets and cited more than 200 million global users, including more than 96 million subscribers. These are Spotify’s figures at the time of launch, not current metrics. One year later, Spotify said its India service had reached listeners in more than 2,300 cities and offered more than 350 curated playlists, according to its first-year account.

Spotify arrived among established services including Gaana, JioSaavn, Wynk Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Google’s music products. TechCrunch reported that Gaana already had more than 80 million users at the time; that contemporary figure is not a current market-share measure. In a price-sensitive market with local competitors, the low rupee price and unusually capable free mobile tier were ways to lower the barrier to trying Spotify, not evidence that the company was aiming for a lesser product.

Rights were another part of the launch story. TechCrunch reported a global content agreement with T-Series and a legal dispute with Warner Music Group, with Warner-controlled material potentially unavailable at launch. Streaming catalogs depend on country-specific rights, labels and releases, so the service should not be described as launching with a guaranteed complete global or Indian catalog. A particular song or album’s availability could depend on the relevant rights and date.
What the launch says—and does not say—about Spotify today
The February 2019 launch is best understood as a combination of local pricing, on-demand mobile listening without a subscription, and culturally specific discovery. It is a historical account, not a guide to today’s Free controls, catalog or Premium benefits. For current plans, prices and features, consult Spotify’s India Premium page rather than applying the launch terms to a present-day account.
