Spotify announced its major Free-tier update on September 15, 2025. The practical headline is simple: Free listeners can now choose a song more directly instead of relying as heavily on shuffle or indirect playback. Spotify says Free users can pick a song, search for a track and start it immediately, or open a song shared by a friend or artist. The upgrade is significant, but it does not turn Free into Premium: ads, offline downloads, unlimited skips, full queue control and lossless audio remain Premium advantages.
The biggest change: more direct song playback
Spotify’s announcement describes three new or improved ways for Free users to reach a specific song. The exact behavior can still vary by device, account and market, so “pick and play” should not be read as unlimited Premium-style control in every playback context.
Pick & Play
Open Spotify and choose a specific song from the app’s available recommendations, albums or playlists. Spotify says Free users can start that selected track directly.
Search & Play
Search for an artist, album or track and begin listening to the result immediately. This removes one of the most frustrating Free-tier barriers for people who already know what they want to hear.

Share & Play
When a friend or artist sends a Spotify song, open the shared item and play that specific track. It is useful for new releases, recommendations and links posted on social platforms.
Spotify’s announcement does not state one universal daily allowance for manually selected songs, nor does it define identical rules for mobile, desktop, web players, speakers, cars and game consoles. Free mobile playback can still involve Smart Shuffle or other context-specific restrictions; see Spotify’s shuffle-play guidance for the current implementation.

Other Free features included in the upgrade
Daylist
Daylist is a personalized playlist that changes with your listening habits, time of day and recurring patterns. Spotify says Free users worldwide can receive daylists with changing songs and titles. To keep a version you like, open its three-dot menu, choose Add to playlist, then create or select a destination playlist.
Lyrics
In the mobile Now Playing view, swipe up from the bottom to see synchronized lyrics when they are available. Spotify also supports sharing lyric content through services such as Instagram and WhatsApp. Lyrics depend on the track, region and account rollout; their absence does not necessarily indicate a problem with your subscription. Custom playlist covers
Spotify says custom cover art was available in 128 markets for iOS and Android when announced. On a playlist you created, open the three-dot menu, select Create cover art, customize it and save. Only one custom cover is saved per playlist at a time; making another replaces the previous one.
Personalized discovery
Free users continue to receive Discover Weekly, Release Radar and other personalized playlists. Spotify says recommendations improve as you listen, save tracks and indicate preferences. That is a description of its personalization system, not a guarantee that every recommendation will be accurate.

How to try the new controls
Search for and play a song
- Open the Spotify mobile or desktop app.
- Tap or click Search.
- Enter an artist, song, album or other query.
- Select the desired track.
- Tap or click the track to begin playback.
Play a shared track
- Open the Spotify link or shared item.
- Confirm that it opens in Spotify rather than only in a browser.
- Tap the track to start it.
Create playlist cover art
- Open a playlist you created in the mobile app.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Select Create cover art.
- Customize and save the cover.
Save a daylist
- Open the daylist you want to keep.
- Tap its three-dot menu.
- Choose Add to playlist.
- Create a new playlist or select an existing one.
View lyrics
- Start a song.
- Open Now Playing.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
What Spotify Free still does not include
Spotify’s official Premium benefits page continues to distinguish the paid service from the ad-supported tier.

Is Spotify Free good enough now?
Free is likely enough if you
- Listen casually and can tolerate audio and display ads.
- Mostly use personalized playlists and discovery features.
- Usually listen while connected to the internet.
- Do not need lossless audio, downloads or precise queue management.
- Want to share music occasionally without paying for a subscription.
Premium is the better fit if you
- Listen for long periods and find ads disruptive.
- Need music on flights, commutes or unreliable connections.
- Regularly skip songs or decide exactly what plays next.
- Want lossless audio with compatible equipment.
- Use Spotify across several devices and want predictable controls.
The update solves the specific-song problem better. Premium still solves the broader problems of interruptions, connectivity, skips, queue control and audio quality.
Availability, rollout and troubleshooting
Spotify described the Free-experience updates as rolling out globally, but individual functions can have separate market, platform, language, licensing and account restrictions. A global announcement is not the same as simultaneous availability for every listener.
- Mobile versus desktop: A control may appear on one platform before another.
- Lyrics: Synchronized lyrics are not available for every track.
- Custom covers: The option may require the latest mobile app, a playlist you created and an eligible market.
- Shared links: A browser redirect, unavailable content or regional licensing can prevent the exact song from playing.
- Managed or child accounts: Parental controls can restrict interactive or visual features. Spotify announced Free managed-account expansion to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands in 2026.
- Trials: A Premium trial can temporarily provide controls that disappear when the trial ends.
- Podcasts and audiobooks: The update concerns the Free music experience and does not automatically change audiobook allowances or other Premium entitlements.
If a feature is missing, try these checks:
- Update Spotify in your device’s app store.
- Fully close and reopen the app.
- Log out and back in.
- Check the feature on mobile and desktop if possible.
- Try another song or playlist.
- Confirm that the account is actually Free rather than on a trial or under managed-account restrictions.
- Contact Spotify Support if the feature remains unavailable.
These steps can rule out common client-side problems, but they cannot override a market, account or licensing restriction.
What this means for the Free-versus-Premium decision
Spotify’s September 15, 2025 announcement was a meaningful Free-tier upgrade, not the abolition of Premium. Free listeners now have a much better chance of starting the exact song they searched for or received in a message, while daylist, lyrics, personalization and playlist customization add useful everyday features. If your remaining frustrations are ads, offline access, unlimited skips, queue control or lossless sound, Premium remains the relevant upgrade.
For comparison, listeners may also consider Apple Music, YouTube Music or Amazon Music. Their current plans and inclusions should be checked on the linked services before switching.
