Spotify’s original AI Playlist beta has evolved into Prompted Playlist. It lets eligible Premium listeners describe a mood, activity, era, genre or other listening goal in ordinary language, then generates a playlist using that request alongside Spotify’s understanding of their taste and current music context. The feature remains a mobile beta with market, language and usage restrictions, so Premium alone does not guarantee access.
What Prompted Playlist does
Prompted Playlist is Spotify’s natural-language playlist generator. Instead of searching track by track or accepting an automatic mix, you describe the listening situation and Spotify curates a saved playlist. Useful requests include:
- “Upbeat indie songs for a 30-minute morning run.”
- “A rainy Sunday playlist with mellow jazz and modern soul.”
- “Essential 1990s hip-hop, but avoid overly aggressive tracks.”
- “Instrumental electronic music for focused work, without vocals.”
- “Songs for cooking dinner with friends—recognizable but not obvious party anthems.”
Spotify says the result combines the prompt with your taste profile and real-time information about music, including trends, charts, culture and music history. That describes the product behavior, not a fully documented model or a guarantee that every instruction will be followed literally.
The current feature grew out of Spotify’s April 2024 AI Playlist beta. Spotify now uses the Prompted Playlist name in its newer rollout.

Who can use it
- Premium required: Spotify’s current support page documents the feature for Premium listeners.
- Mobile app: The current U.S. instructions specify mobile, not desktop or web.
- English: Spotify currently documents English-language use on its U.S. support page.
- Beta and market dependent: Rollout is staggered, and Spotify says usage limits apply and may change.
Free users can play a Prompted Playlist that someone shares with them. They do not receive an individualized version and cannot use the shared prompt to generate their own playlist. Plan eligibility beyond Spotify’s general Premium requirement may vary by market; check the current support article and the official Premium page for your account.
How to create a Prompted Playlist
- Open Spotify’s mobile app and go to Your Library.
- Tap the Create or plus button at the top.
- Select Prompted Playlist.
- Describe what you want to hear.
- Choose a refresh schedule: daily or weekly.
- Tap Generate playlist.
- Review the tracks and Spotify’s explanatory notes for selected songs or episodes.
- Use Edit prompt to broaden, narrow or otherwise change the request.
Menu labels may differ during the transition from AI Playlist, or because Spotify is testing different interfaces. The earlier AI Playlist flow used Your Library → plus → AI Playlist, followed by a suggested or custom prompt, track additions or removals, Create and Refine playlist. Spotify documents that older flow here.

How to write prompts that work better
Start with a specific request and revise one variable at a time. Include the dimensions that matter to you:
Recommended Free Tools
- Purpose: workout, commute, reading, cooking, sleep or a party.
- Mood: energetic, intimate, optimistic, tense or nostalgic.
- Sound: neo-soul, post-punk, ambient techno or acoustic folk.
- Era: 1970s, early 2000s or recent releases.
- Familiarity: deep cuts, recognizable songs or new discoveries.
- References and exclusions: name two or three reference artists and state styles or artists to avoid.
- Sequence: request a calm opening, gradual energy increase or dramatic finish.
- Audience and content: office-safe, family-friendly, clean versions or instrumental tracks.
“Similar to” is generally more useful than demanding exact copies of one artist. Exclusions are worth stating, but Spotify does not promise perfect compliance. If the first result is generic, ask for a clearer mood, narrower genre, specific decade, more discoveries, more familiar songs or a defined energy curve.
Refresh scheduling is optional. Daily updates suit recurring workouts or work sessions but can make a playlist feel unstable; avoid scheduled refreshes when you need a fixed set of tracks. Save favorites into a conventional playlist if predictability matters.

Prompted Playlist compared with Spotify’s other recommendations
| Feature | How it starts | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Prompted Playlist | Your written request plus Spotify’s taste and music context | Prompt wording, revisions and daily or weekly refresh |
| Discover Weekly | Spotify’s automatic weekly discovery system | Little direct control; no user-written brief |
| Release Radar | New releases from followed or frequently played artists | Indirectly shaped by follows and listening |
| Daylist | Changing listening habits and time-sensitive context | Mostly automatic; no custom brief |
| Spotify Mixes | Personalized artist, genre or pattern-based mixes | Choose among Spotify’s predefined mix categories |
| Radio | A song, artist or playlist seed | Seed the station, but not a detailed scenario |
| DJ | An interactive personalized stream | Listen through selections and, where available, make requests; it is not a saved prompt-generated playlist |
Spotify lists DJ and Prompted Playlist as separate Premium benefits in its Premium overview. Prompted Playlist is best understood as user-steered playlist creation, not a replacement for every recommendation system.
Common problems and practical fixes
The option is missing
- Confirm that the account is Premium.
- Update the Spotify mobile app.
- Check Your Library for the Create or plus control.
- Verify that the feature is available in your market and language.
- Sign out and back in if your account should qualify but the option is absent.
Desktop access is not a workaround when the current support documentation specifies mobile. A VPN should not be treated as an unlock method: account, market and catalog conditions can still determine access.

The playlist ignores part of the request
Use Edit prompt and change one element at a time. Add a more precise mood or genre, name reference artists, state exclusions, request a progression, or specify whether you want familiar songs or discovery. Catalog rights and regional availability can also prevent a requested track from appearing.

Explicit songs appear
Include “clean,” “family-friendly” or “no explicit lyrics” in the prompt and review Spotify’s explicit-content settings. Neither the wording nor the setting should be treated as a guarantee that every result will be perfect.
A refreshed playlist changes unexpectedly
That is the intended behavior of daily and weekly refresh. Turn refresh off when a stable collection is more important, then copy preferred tracks to an ordinary playlist.
A shared playlist is not personalized for the recipient
Free recipients can listen to the shared result but cannot generate their own personalized version from its prompt. Premium recipients in supported test markets may see that option, according to Spotify’s support documentation.

Control, privacy and limits to keep in mind
Your listening patterns and taste influence personalization, as Spotify describes. The cited product documentation does not establish how long prompts are retained, whether they are used to train models, or whether they are shared with third parties, so those assumptions should not be made.
- Prompted Playlist is still a beta and has changeable usage limits.
- Results are curated, not deterministic; Spotify may not honor every constraint.
- Recommendations can favor familiar or repetitive tracks, especially with “similar to” requests.
- Regional catalog rights, listening history and explicit-content settings affect what appears.
- English-only support and mobile-only access exclude some users.
- Sharing lets others listen, while personalization for the recipient depends on their Premium status and market.
Is Premium worth it for this feature?
Prompted Playlist is most useful if you repeatedly need situation-specific mixes and enjoy steering recommendations with words rather than choosing every track yourself. Refresh schedules and editable prompts make it more practical than a one-off novelty for workouts, commutes and recurring work sessions.
It is a weaker reason to subscribe if you are outside a supported market, need prompts in another language, use Spotify mainly on desktop, want exact control over every song, or are already satisfied with Discover Weekly, Daylist, Mixes, Radio and DJ. Premium also includes other benefits, so compare the full offer and current price on Spotify’s official signup page rather than treating this beta feature as a universal justification for upgrading.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Spotify’s AI Playlist is now Prompted Playlist—a Premium mobile beta that turns a natural-language brief into a personalized, optionally refreshed playlist. Check your market and language eligibility first, then use specific prompts and edit them when the result misses the mark.
