On May 10, 2021, Spotify announced a mobile sharing update that let listeners send a podcast link starting at a particular moment in an episode. The same announcement covered Canvas sharing to Snapchat and a redesigned sharing menu. These are historical launch details—not confirmation that today’s Spotify app uses the same controls or offers identical availability.
What timestamped podcast sharing does
Instead of sending only a link to an entire episode, a listener could share a link associated with the point currently playing. When the recipient opened it, Spotify said playback would begin at that point, so the listener would not need to find the moment by scrubbing through the episode. Spotify described the feature in its May 10, 2021 announcement.
This was a deep link into an episode, not an exported audio clip or a permanently extracted segment. The announcement does not say that a timestamp link would provide access to an episode the recipient otherwise could not play. The recipient still needs the episode to be available to them; removal, regional restrictions, or other playback limits could prevent listening.
A precise link can make it easier to recommend a joke, an interview answer, an argument, or a particular explanation. But a short moment can lose context, or reveal a punchline or development the recipient would rather discover in sequence.

- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)

You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)

- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
How Spotify said to share a podcast moment
- Open a podcast episode in Spotify and start listening.
- While the desired moment is playing, tap the episode’s Share button.
- Use the “switch to share” control to share from the current playback time.
- Choose a social or messaging destination and send the resulting link.
Those steps and labels come from Spotify’s 2021 instructions. The announcement does not establish that the same control or wording remains in the current app. If you cannot find a timestamp option, opening the in-app Share menu while the episode is playing is a reasonable first check; app updates, current feature availability, or a changed interface may affect what appears. Sharing the episode normally is a fallback.
What Spotify announced alongside it
Canvas sharing on Snapchat
Spotify also expanded sharing for music tracks that have Canvas, its looping visual artwork, to Snapchat. Spotify had already described sharing Canvas to Instagram Stories; the Snapchat addition was a music-sharing feature, separate from podcast timestamps. Spotify for Artists described Canvas as an approximately eight-second looping visual and explained that audio does not play directly in an Instagram Story: viewers must click through to Spotify to listen to the track. See Spotify for Artists’ Canvas explanation.

A redesigned mobile sharing menu
The announcement also described previews of shared Canvas, a clearer grid of social and messaging destinations, and a destination list populated according to the apps installed on the phone. That meant available choices could differ between users’ devices; Spotify did not describe one identical list for everyone.
Who could use the features at launch?
Spotify said the new sharing features were rolling out globally to iOS and Android users on May 10, 2021. That is Spotify’s launch-era statement, not proof of uninterrupted availability in every country or of current support. The announcement did not provide a country-by-country list or establish equivalent timestamp controls on desktop, web, smart speakers, or in-car interfaces.

It also does not specify how a timestamp behaves if an episode is edited, replaced, or dynamically updated. Treat that as an unanswered edge case rather than assuming the linked moment will always correspond to precisely the same audio.
Why Spotify emphasized social sharing
Spotify said social sharing had become especially important as people connected remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also cited a survey in which roughly 40% of music discovery was attributed to social channels. That figure is Spotify’s reported survey result; the announcement does not provide its sample size, methodology, field dates, geographic scope, or question wording, so it should not be treated as an independently established industry statistic.

For podcasters, a link to one moment can make a recommendation more specific than a link to an entire episode. For musicians, Canvas gives a shared track a moving visual identity. Those are plausible promotional benefits, not evidence that either feature guarantees more plays, rankings, or revenue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the announcement did—and did not—mean
- It described sharing tools, not the launch of a Spotify social network, public comments, or a friend feed.
- Podcast timestamp sharing linked to a point in an episode; it was not a tool for downloading or reposting audio clips.
- Canvas was for music tracks with looping visuals, not the podcast timestamp feature.
- Spotify for Artists said Canvas use had increased track shares by “up to 200 percent.” This is a Spotify-reported result, not a guaranteed outcome for every artist; the claim appears in its Canvas guidance.
- A share link is not permission to download or redistribute the underlying podcast audio.
The original announcement is the best evidence for what Spotify rolled out in 2021. It does not verify whether the feature still works identically in 2026, which episodes support it now, or how every destination app handles the link.
