When Spotify will not let you log in, first confirm that you are opening the right Spotify account with the right sign-in method. A failed password, stale app session, browser problem, network restriction, and hacked account can all look similar—but the fix is different for each one.
Work through these eight fixes in order. Do not reinstall the app before checking your account identity: reinstalling Spotify cannot repair a wrong email address, an invalid password, or a compromised account.
1. Confirm the original Spotify account and sign-in method
Spotify accounts may be created or accessed with an email address, phone number, Apple, Google, Facebook, or another supported sign-in method. Try every method you may have used when you originally registered.

- Try each email address you have used in the past.
- Try your phone number if you may have registered with one.
- Try Continue with Apple, Continue with Google, or Continue with Facebook if you previously used those options.
- Use Spotify’s password-reset page with possible email addresses to see which one is associated with an account.
Your Spotify username identifies the account, but it is generally not the same as your display name. A display name cannot be used as a login credential. You usually do not need the username to sign in.
Important upcoming change: Spotify’s current help guidance says that after September 1, 2026, users will be able to log in with their email address instead of their username. People who already sign in with email, Facebook, Google, or Apple do not need to take action. If you rely on a username, verify that an email address is added to your account before that date.
Did Spotify open an empty library?
If you can log in but your playlists, saved music, or subscription are missing, you may have entered a different Spotify account—not lost your library. Sign out and repeat the login-method checks above. In particular, an Apple or Google login can lead to a separate Spotify account from one created with an email address.
2. Reset your password carefully
Use Spotify’s official password-reset process and enter the email address or username associated with the account. Spotify will send reset instructions by email.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Request a password reset using a likely email address or your Spotify username.
- Check your inbox, spam or junk folder, and any filtered or automatically sorted folders.
- Open the reset email and create a new password that you do not use on another service.
- Return to Spotify and sign in using the account identifier connected to that reset.
If no reset email arrives, try other email addresses you may have used at signup. If Spotify says it cannot find an account, that address may not be the one connected to your Spotify profile.
What if the reset link is invalid?
Request a new reset email and open the newest link in a private or incognito browser window. Older links may no longer work after a newer reset request. If you requested too many resets in a short period, wait and try again later; Spotify also recommends trying another browser or device.
You need access to the account’s registered email address to open the reset link. If that email belongs to an old provider or inactive mailbox, try recovering the email account first. Do not send a password-reset link, password, full receipt, or complete payment-card details to anyone offering help in a forum.
3. Try the account’s alternate login methods
After you regain access, review Spotify’s login-method settings. Spotify provides a page where you can see the methods currently associated with the account and add additional methods. A newly added method should then appear among the account’s available login options.

This can explain an especially confusing situation: an Apple, Google, or email login may work successfully but open a different Spotify account. Spotify also says that the same login details cannot be added to multiple Spotify accounts, so the account shown after login can help identify which credential belongs where.
Apple sign-in and hidden email addresses
If you chose Apple’s option to hide your email address, Apple may have created a private relay address for Spotify. When resetting the Spotify password, use the Apple private relay address associated with Spotify rather than your normal Apple email address. You can find the relay address in your Apple account settings.
4. Test a private browser window, another browser, or the web player
If the Spotify app rejects a login but the account details are correct, test Spotify in a browser. This separates an account problem from an app-session problem.
- Open Spotify’s web player in a private or incognito window.
- Try the same sign-in method you normally use.
- If it works there, clear the app’s stored session or continue using the web player while repairing the app.
- If it does not work, try another supported browser or device.
Private browsing is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed solution. It temporarily avoids some stale cookies, extensions, and existing browser sessions. If the web player works only in private browsing, disable or remove the problematic extension and clear Spotify-related browser data rather than broadly turning off security software.
Spotify’s current web-player guidance lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari among supported desktop browser families. Requirements vary by platform. For example, Spotify lists Android 6.0 or later for the web player, along with minimum browser versions for Chrome, Samsung Internet, and Firefox; on iOS, it lists Chrome 87 or later and Safari 15 or later. Browser support can change, so update the browser if the page will not load.
On a work, school, hotel, office, or other shared network, administrators may restrict access to streaming services. A web player that works on another network points toward a network-specific problem rather than a bad Spotify password.
5. Update Spotify and your operating system
An outdated app or operating system can cause sign-in screens to freeze, close, or fail to complete authentication. Update Spotify through your device’s official app store. On desktop, use Spotify’s official download or update route rather than an unofficial installer.
Also install available operating-system updates. Spotify’s currently listed minimum native-app requirements are:

| Platform | Spotify’s listed minimum |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 16.1 or later |
| Android | Android 7.0 or later |
| Mac | macOS 12.0 or later |
| Windows | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 or later |
Spotify regularly reevaluates supported operating systems and devices. If your device is below the listed requirement, updating the app alone may not resolve the problem.
6. Clear Spotify’s cache, then reinstall
Cached data can become inconsistent after an app update or interrupted session. Clear the cache before reinstalling.
On iPhone or Android
In Spotify, open your profile picture, choose Settings and privacy, then open Data-saving and offline and the storage section. Choose the option to clear the cache.
On desktop
Open Spotify’s Settings and select Clear cache.
Restart Spotify and try signing in again. If clearing the cache does not help, reinstall the official Spotify app. Reinstallation can fix common technical issues and ensures that you receive a current app build, but it has an important cost: it removes downloaded offline music and podcasts. You will need to download that content again after signing back in.

Reinstalling is useful for a damaged app installation; it will not fix a wrong account, a forgotten password, loss of access to your email, or an account takeover. That is why it belongs after the account and password checks.
7. Check for a Spotify outage or network problem
Before repeatedly changing your password, check Spotify’s Community Ongoing Issues board and the @SpotifyStatus account for service-wide problems. If other users are reporting login failures at the same time, the problem may be on Spotify’s side.
You can also compare networks:
- Try Wi-Fi, then cellular data.
- If possible, try a different Wi-Fi network.
- Test the web player and the app separately.
- Note whether only a work, school, hotel, or public network fails.
If Spotify works over cellular data but not on Wi-Fi, restart the router and check whether the network uses filtering, a captive portal, parental controls, or workplace restrictions. This is a diagnostic comparison—not proof that any particular network setting is the cause.
Do not assume a VPN will fix the problem. VPN behavior varies by location, provider, network, and account, and it is not presented by Spotify as a standard login remedy.

8. Treat unexpected account changes as a security incident
A password that suddenly stops working is not always a normal forgotten-password problem. Treat the account as potentially compromised if you notice any of these signs:
- The account email address changed.
- Playlists were added, deleted, or altered without your permission.
- Music starts playing when you are not using Spotify.
- Your subscription changed unexpectedly.
- An unfamiliar Facebook connection or third-party app appears.
- You receive login or account-change emails you did not initiate.
- Your usual password no longer works.
If you can still access the account
- Reset Spotify’s password to a strong, unique password.
- Change the password for the associated email account and any connected Apple, Google, or Facebook account if you suspect those credentials were exposed.
- Use Spotify’s sign out everywhere option.
- Review connected third-party apps and remove anything you do not recognize.
- Log in again and reconnect only services you trust.
Spotify says signing out everywhere can take up to one hour to take effect. A password manager can optionally help you create and store a different strong password for Spotify and your email account; it is not required to log in and is not a Spotify-endorsed fix.
If you cannot access the account
Contact Spotify Support through its official support channels. Spotify says a receipt or bank-statement screenshot may help establish ownership, but hide sensitive information such as full card numbers, security codes, and unrelated transactions before submitting anything.
Which fix should you try first?
| What you see | Most likely next step |
|---|---|
| Login succeeds but playlists are missing | Sign out and test other email addresses and login methods; you may be in a second account. |
| Password is rejected | Use the official reset process, then check spam and filtered folders. |
| Reset email never arrives | Try other signup addresses and confirm that you can access the registered mailbox. |
| Reset link says it is invalid | Request a new link and open the newest one in a private window. |
| App fails but browser works | Update Spotify, clear its cache, and reinstall only if necessary. |
| Spotify fails only on one Wi-Fi network | Compare cellular data or another network; the network may restrict the service. |
| Email, playlists, or subscription changed unexpectedly | Treat it as a security incident and secure the account and associated services. |
What not to do
- Do not keep requesting password resets rapidly; temporary limits may apply.
- Do not download unofficial APKs, modified Spotify clients, or unknown desktop installers.
- Do not post passwords, reset links, full receipts, or full payment-card details publicly.
- Do not reinstall repeatedly before confirming that you are using the correct Spotify account.
- Do not disable all security software as a first step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I log in to Spotify but not see my playlists?
Try the email address, phone number, Apple, Google, or Facebook sign-in method originally associated with the account. If the library is empty after login, you may have opened a different Spotify account.
What should I do if my Spotify password-reset email does not work?
Request another password-reset email, check spam and filtered folders, and open the newest link in a private or incognito window. If no message arrives, try other email addresses used at signup.
Does an old device prevent Spotify from letting me log in?
Yes. Spotify’s current guidance says iOS 16.1 or later, Android 7.0 or later, macOS 12.0 or later, and Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 or later for its native apps. Requirements can change as Spotify reevaluates supported devices.
How do I know whether my Spotify account was hacked?
Changed account details, unfamiliar playlists, unexplained playback, an altered subscription, unfamiliar login emails, or a password that no longer works can indicate compromise. Reset Spotify and associated account passwords, sign out everywhere, remove unknown connected apps, and contact Spotify Support if you are locked out.
The Bottom Line
Start with account identity, not app repair: try the email address, phone number, Apple, Google, or Facebook method originally used to create the account. Then reset the password, test a private browser or another network, update and clear Spotify, and reinstall only if necessary. If your email, playlists, subscription, or playback changed unexpectedly, stop treating it as an ordinary login error and secure the account as a possible compromise.
