What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Spotify’s Web Player will not load or play, start with the symptom: check for a service issue, test a private window, and try another current browser. For a “protected content” error or tracks that skip immediately, check the browser’s Widevine/DRM settings. If playback appears to run but you hear nothing, check audio routing instead.
Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari among supported desktop browsers, and recommends updating the browser and trying a private window. Work through the fixes below from least disruptive to more specific checks.
Open Spotify Web Player in a new tab to test.
Match the symptom to a first check
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| The page will not load or shows a blank screen | Check for a reported issue, then try a private window or another network. |
| You are stuck in a login loop | Try a private window; if that works, clear Spotify’s site data in the regular window. |
| A protected-content warning appears | Enable protected content or DRM in the browser. |
| Tracks skip immediately | Check DRM, extensions, and whether another browser plays the same track. |
| The progress bar moves, but there is no sound | Check tab mute, site sound permissions, operating-system output, and Spotify Connect. |
| It works on your phone but not in the browser | Focus on the browser profile, extensions, DRM settings, and network. |
| Spotify fails across devices and products | Check for a Spotify service issue before changing browser settings. |
1. Check whether Spotify has a service issue
If the Web Player, login page, and other Spotify products fail around the same time, the cause may be on Spotify’s side. Check the Spotify Community Ongoing Issues board and test Spotify on another device or browser.
The board can help identify reports of loading, login, skipping, or regional issues, but reports may lag or affect only some users. If other Spotify products work on your phone, that does not rule out a desktop-browser or network problem. When a current incident matches your symptoms, wait for the service-side fix rather than repeatedly clearing data or reinstalling a browser.

2. Update the browser and confirm it is supported
Spotify’s current Web Player help page lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari for desktop. Spotify describes desktop support as a rolling baseline of widely available browser versions updated within the previous 30 months, rather than one permanent minimum version. Update your browser even if it appears on that list; playback and DRM components are maintained through browser updates.
Spotify lists these mobile browser minimums separately:
- Android: Android 6.0 or later, with Chrome 87+, Samsung Internet 17+, or Firefox 115+.
- iOS: Chrome 87+ or Safari 15+.
These mobile minimums are not desktop version requirements. Current browser menus may differ slightly by version.
- Chrome: Menu → Help → About Google Chrome.
- Edge: Menu → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge.
- Firefox: Menu → Help → About Firefox.
- Safari: Check for macOS or iOS/iPadOS updates in system settings.
After updating, restart the browser and reopen open.spotify.com. If the page still fails, continue to a private window.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
3. Try a private window, then isolate extensions
Spotify recommends testing the Web Player in a private or incognito window. This is a useful diagnostic because it avoids much of the normal browser profile’s stored site data and may prevent extensions from running, depending on their settings.
- Open a private window. On Chrome or Edge, use Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+N on macOS. In Firefox or Safari, choose the browser’s Private Window command.
- Visit open.spotify.com, sign in, and test a track.
- If playback works there, return to the regular window and disable extensions one at a time. Pay particular attention to ad blockers, privacy or tracking blockers, script blockers, VPN/proxy extensions, audio enhancers, and security add-ons.
Spotify’s Web Playback SDK documentation describes problems with privacy and third-party blocking extensions in SDK playback contexts. The SDK is not the same product as the consumer Web Player, so this supports checking extensions without proving that any particular extension will break the Web Player.
If the player fails in both windows, extensions are less likely to be the cause, though managed browser policies and security software can still apply. Private browsing is a test, not a requirement for everyday listening.
4. Clear Spotify’s site data, not your whole browser
Stale or corrupted Spotify cookies and stored site files can interfere with loading or sign-in. If private browsing works but the regular window does not, clear data for Spotify alone before deleting all browser history and cookies.

- Open the Spotify Web Player in your regular browser.
- Select the lock or site-controls icon beside the address.
- Open the site’s permissions or stored-data settings and delete data for
open.spotify.com. - Close every Spotify tab, reopen the browser, visit the Web Player, and sign in again.
Labels vary by browser and version. You may need to sign in again, and Spotify-specific preferences stored in that browser may reset. Clearing site data will not resolve an outage, unsupported browser, blocked DRM, or network restriction. A Spotify Community troubleshooting example also discusses private browsing and browser site data.
5. Enable protected content or Widevine DRM
If you see “Playback of protected content is not enabled,” receive a similar DRM warning, or find that tracks skip immediately, check the browser’s protected-content setting. Spotify says the Web Player needs Widevine or equivalent protected-content support for protected playback. Enabling it addresses that class of problem, but it cannot fix every playback failure.
Chrome
- Enter
chrome://settings/contentin the address bar. - Open the settings for
open.spotify.com. - Find Protected content IDs and select Allow or Default.
These are the steps on Spotify’s Web Player help page; Chrome labels can change between versions.
Firefox
- If Firefox shows a yellow DRM warning bar, select Enable DRM.
- If no warning bar appears, enter
about:preferences#contentin the address bar. - Under DRM content, turn on Play DRM.
Then reload Spotify and test a track.
Edge, Windows N editions, and other browsers
Spotify notes that some Windows 10 N editions require Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for Web Player playback. This applies to affected N editions, not every Windows computer; do not install it unless your Windows edition and missing media components make it relevant.

Brave, Opera, and other privacy-focused browsers may have different DRM, shield, or media settings. If you cannot find the relevant control or playback still fails, test a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari browser. Spotify’s consumer Web Player instructions are the best guide for open.spotify.com; its separate embed troubleshooting documentation covers encrypted-media permissions in embedded players, which are not the same as the Web Player.
6. Check mute, browser permissions, and audio routing
If the progress bar moves but you hear nothing, the player may be working while sound is muted or routed to another device. Check these items in order:
- Make sure the Spotify tab is not muted.
- Open the site-controls icon beside the address and confirm that sound is allowed.
- Open the operating system’s volume mixer. Confirm the browser is not muted and is assigned to the intended speakers or headphones.
- Play audio on another website to check whether the browser can produce sound.
- If using Bluetooth headphones, disconnect and reconnect them.
- Check Spotify Connect to see whether playback has been transferred to another device.
This checklist is general browser and device troubleshooting; Spotify’s Web Player help page does not give one universal audio-output procedure. If the progress bar does not move, investigate loading, DRM, network, account, or service issues instead of treating the problem as volume alone.

Shared networks at schools, workplaces, hotels, or offices may restrict access to services. Spotify specifically notes that network restrictions can affect the Web Player.

- Try another connection, such as a phone hotspot, to see whether playback changes.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, then retry Spotify. A VPN can change the apparent region and complicate login or playback; this test is not a recommendation to bypass regional availability rules.
- If the problem occurs only on a work or school network, ask its administrator whether Spotify is restricted.
- Restart your router only after testing another connection. A restart will not remove an intentional network policy.
If the login page loads but playback requests fail, selective network filtering may be involved. Avoid random DNS changes, hosts-file edits, firewall-rule changes, or disabling security software as first steps; they can create new security or connectivity problems.
8. Switch browsers or use Spotify’s app
Test another current supported browser. If the Web Player works there, the cause is more likely to be specific to the original browser’s profile, extensions, DRM component, or managed settings. You can use the working browser temporarily or continue isolating the original profile. If all browsers fail, test Spotify on a phone or another device to help distinguish a browser issue from an account, network, or service problem.
Spotify recommends trying the desktop app if Web Player troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Get it from the official Spotify download page. An app is not suitable for users who cannot install software or are using a locked-down device, in which case the working browser or network is the practical alternative.
If the Web Player still does not work
Before contacting Spotify Support, note the details that distinguish a browser failure from a service, account, or network issue:
- The exact error message and whether the page loads, signs in, and starts playback.
- Your browser name and exact version, plus your operating system and edition.
- Whether a private window or another supported browser changed the result.
- Whether another network or device worked, and whether you were using a VPN or proxy.
- Whether DRM/protected content was enabled, and whether the problem affects every track or only particular music, podcasts, or videos.
- Whether the progress bar moves, whether sound is audible, and whether Spotify Connect is sending playback elsewhere.
These observations help identify the next useful step without resorting to unofficial clients, modified apps, or browser hacks.
