Best free starting point: Libby, if you have a card from a participating library. Best paid all-rounder: Audible, for listeners who prioritize a broad store and mature playback ecosystem. Best for supporting independent bookstores: Libro.fm. Spotify, Everand, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Hoopla, and local-file players can be better fits for particular budgets and habits.

These apps do not all sell the same thing. Some lend books, some sell account-linked titles, some provide temporary subscription access, and some only play audio files you already have. Start with the access model you want—not an app-store rating or an unverified catalog-size claim.

Compare the best audiobook apps at a glance

App or service Works on iOS Works on Android How access works Do you keep the audiobook? Offline listening Best fit
Libby Yes Yes Borrow through a participating library; library card required No. The loan expires and returns automatically. Yes, for the loan period Free listening and readers willing to use library availability and holds
Audible Yes Yes Membership benefits, eligible credit purchases, store purchases, and a subscription-included catalog Eligible purchased titles generally remain in the account; titles accessed only through a subscription catalog do not become purchases Yes, for eligible titles Listeners who value a broad paid ecosystem and want to use credits for purchases
Libro.fm Yes Yes Credit membership or individual purchases; purchases support a selected independent bookstore Purchases remain associated with the account; eligible titles also have DRM-free downloads Yes Bookstore supporters and listeners who value downloadable files when available
Spotify Yes Yes Audiobooks are included on eligible plans in supported markets, with access measured by listening time Included access is not the same as buying a title Plan and title rules apply Existing Spotify users whose listening fits the allowance
Everand Yes Yes Subscription access to audiobooks, ebooks, and other digital reading material No; access depends on the subscription and title availability Generally available in the app; check current plan and title terms Readers who move between ebooks and audiobooks
Hoopla Yes Yes Borrow through a participating library; library card required No. Borrowed access ends with the loan. Available through the app Library users looking for another source, including titles that may be available sooner
Apple Books Yes No dedicated Android Books app Buy individual audiobooks Account-based access; not an unrestricted audio file Yes, for purchased titles in the app iPhone and iPad users who prefer one-off purchases
Google Play Books Yes Yes Buy individual audiobooks Account-based access; not an unrestricted audio file Yes, for purchased titles in the app Android-first listeners who do not want a recurring membership
Local-file player, such as Bound or Smart Audiobook Player Some players Some players Play compatible files acquired separately You keep the file, subject to its source terms Yes, once the file is on the device People with DRM-free MP3 or M4B files already in hand

Availability, catalog, borrowing terms, and features can vary by country, library, title, device, and operating system. The platform rows identify broad compatibility, not guaranteed feature parity or identical catalogs.

Choose by how you want to listen

If you want free audiobooks

  1. Start with Libby and add the library or libraries for which you have valid cards. Search for the title and check whether it is available now, can be placed on hold, or is absent from that library’s collection.
  2. Check Hoopla if your library participates. It may have a different catalog or immediate access to a title, but the library sets its borrowing limits and selection.
  3. If neither app has the audiobook, look at your library’s digital-resources page for other services. A title that is unavailable now may be on hold, licensed through another service, or not licensed by your library at all.

Libby says it is free to use with a participating library card, with no subscription cost, in-app purchases, or late fees. Each library selects and licenses its own digital collection, so the app does not offer one universal catalog. OverDrive’s Libby overview describes its features and supported platforms.

If you usually listen to one book a month

Compare a credit membership such as Audible or Libro.fm with the title’s one-off price in Apple Books, Google Play Books, or another store. A sale can beat a credit; a credit can be useful when the selected title costs more than the membership’s effective credit price. Count only credits you actually use, and compare standard renewal terms rather than assuming a trial or introductory offer will continue.

If you finish several books a month

Compare what you would pay for purchases against temporary catalog access. Audible’s eligible credit purchases and Everand’s subscription catalog are different kinds of access. Spotify may cover some listening for an eligible plan, but it measures its audiobook benefit in hours, not titles. Long books can consume an hour allowance quickly.

If you already pay for Spotify

Check whether your plan and country include audiobooks, then compare the allowance with your actual monthly listening time. Secondary coverage has reported a 15-hour monthly allowance for eligible U.S. Premium plans; eligibility and terms can change, so confirm the current details on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page and its audiobooks page. Do not treat the benefit as unlimited listening or as a permanent audiobook library.

If downloadable files matter

Libro.fm offers DRM-free downloads for eligible purchases, but check the individual title for availability and format. A DRM-free file can be played in compatible software; an app purchase or membership credit elsewhere may instead give you account-mediated access. Do not assume that every purchased audiobook can be exported, backed up, or moved to another player.

If you use both iPhone and Android

Libby, Audible, Libro.fm, Spotify, and Everand have apps for both platforms; Google Play Books also supports access beyond Android. Apple Books is primarily an Apple-platform choice. Before building a collection, check that your account and progress sync across your devices. With local files, the player apps available on each operating system may differ.

What happens to your audiobook when access ends?

Access type After cancellation or expiry What to check
Library loan The title expires and returns to the library. Loan period, renewal, holds, and whether the library has another service with the title
Subscription catalog Access normally ends when the subscription ends or the title is no longer eligible. Whether the title is included access or a separate purchase
Credit purchase An eligible purchased title generally remains available in the account after membership cancellation. Which titles count as purchases, and what happens to unused credits
DRM-free purchase Compatible downloaded files can be retained, subject to the vendor’s terms. Whether that exact title has a DRM-free download and which formats are offered
À-la-carte account purchase Access is tied to the retailer account and platform rules. Whether the book can be downloaded for offline use and whether it can be exported
Local file The file remains available as long as you keep it and a compatible player. File format, DRM status, chapter metadata, and source permissions

“Bought” does not necessarily mean “unrestricted audio file.” Audible, Apple Books, and Google Play Books purchases are generally account-mediated; a local file or eligible DRM-free download offers more portability, but file compatibility and the seller’s terms still matter. For Libro.fm’s purchase and download terms, see its guarantee information.

How the main audiobook apps differ

Libby: best free first stop

Libby borrows audiobooks and other digital materials from participating libraries. It supports iOS, Android, browser access, offline listening, a sleep timer, variable playback speed, and progress tools. Its Android listing currently describes playback speeds from 0.6x to 3.0x; features can differ by platform and app version. OverDrive also lists Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Check the Android listing for its current feature details, and see OverDrive’s Libby listening features for car and playback information.

The main trade-off is library availability: your library chooses the titles and loan rules. A popular book may be on hold, the library may license a different edition, or it may not have licensed the title. If a loan expires during travel, the app will not turn it into a permanent file.

Audible: best paid ecosystem for breadth and discovery

Audible combines an audiobook store, memberships with credits, a subscription-included Plus Catalog where available, sales, and account-linked purchases. These benefits are not interchangeable: a credit-eligible purchase is different from listening to a title included only in the catalog. Audible is a strong choice when catalog breadth, discovery, cross-device progress, and integration with compatible Kindle editions matter more than having unrestricted files.

Check the current plan and the specific title before joining. Prices, introductory offers, catalog access, and title availability can vary by country and change over time. Audible’s membership benefits page explains the current offer; its device compatibility guidance currently identifies Android 9 or later, while iOS support depends on the minimum version in effect.

Libro.fm: best for independent-bookstore support

Libro.fm sells audiobooks individually and through a credit-based membership, and lets customers choose an independent bookstore to support. Its app supports offline listening. Eligible purchases are available as DRM-free downloads, a useful distinction for listeners who want files they can keep and play elsewhere. Verify the individual book: DRM-free availability and formats are not guaranteed for every title.

Libro.fm is not an unlimited listening subscription, and its catalog may not include every title or edition available elsewhere. Compare the current membership terms and the title’s retail price on Libro.fm’s membership page before deciding whether a credit is worthwhile.

Spotify: useful bundled access, not a default audiobook service

Spotify puts music, podcasts, and audiobooks in one app, which is convenient if you already use an eligible plan. Its audiobook benefit is governed by plan, market, title, and listening-time rules; extra listening or purchasing may be handled separately. That makes it better suited to moderate listening that fits the allowance than to someone who routinely finishes long books. Confirm current rules through Spotify Support and its U.S. plan pages.

Hoopla: a useful second library app

Hoopla offers audiobooks alongside ebooks, movies, television, comics, music, and BingePass content. Access is funded through participating libraries, and the selection and monthly borrow limits depend on the library. Some titles may be immediately available, but neither universal availability nor unlimited borrowing is guaranteed. Check the library’s own digital-services page as well as Hoopla’s service page.

Everand: for readers who mix ebooks and audiobooks

Everand combines subscription access to audiobooks, ebooks, and other digital reading material. It can suit readers who want to sample titles across formats rather than buy a separate audiobook every time. It is access, not ownership: catalog availability and usage terms can depend on title, plan, and region. Review the current subscription terms and service details rather than assuming “unlimited” means every audiobook is always available.

Apple Books and Google Play Books: buy one title at a time

Apple Books is a straightforward option for iPhone and iPad users who prefer individual purchases over a membership. It is not a cross-platform choice for someone who expects a dedicated Android Books app, and its purchases remain tied to Apple’s account ecosystem. Browse the Apple audiobook store or Apple Books overview.

Google Play Books sells audiobooks individually and suits Android users who want to buy without a recurring audiobook plan. It also supports access beyond Android, but purchases remain subject to Google account and platform rules. Browse Google Play Books or Google Books.

Local-file players: best when you already have the audio

Bound, BookPlayer, Smart Audiobook Player, and Listen Audiobook Player are playback tools rather than audiobook stores. They can be useful for compatible DRM-free MP3 or M4B files, public-domain recordings, personal recordings, or legally made backups. You must obtain the files separately. Before choosing a player, check whether it handles your file format, chapters, cloud imports, CarPlay or Android Auto, and the device ecosystem you use. A DRM-protected download from a bookstore will not necessarily import into a third-party player.

Check the details that affect real value

  • Catalog fit: Search for books you actually want—such as new releases, nonfiction, romance, fantasy, children’s titles, or a specific narrator—in your country and preferred edition. Catalog size alone does not establish that a particular book is available.
  • Total cost: Compare the standard renewal price, annual cost before tax, title sale prices, and unused credits. Include trial or promotional terms only as temporary offers, not as the long-term price.
  • Borrowing rules: For library apps, check your library’s loan periods, holds, renewal rules, and simultaneous checkout or monthly limits. These are not universal app settings.
  • Offline travel: Confirm that the whole book or needed chapters finished downloading while online, that the loan or subscription will remain valid, and that your phone has enough storage.
  • Playback controls: If you rely on sleep timers, speed controls, bookmarks, notes, chapter navigation, or progress sync, confirm those features on your specific device and app version.
  • Car use: Bluetooth sends audio to a car, but CarPlay and Android Auto provide integrated controls and require app support. Libby advertises both; check other apps individually.
  • Accounts and sync: Use the same sign-in method on each device. Apple, Google, and email logins can create separate accounts if you are not careful, which can split purchases or progress.
  • Billing: Compare the final checkout price and renewal terms if signing up through an app store versus the service’s website; billing offers and prices may differ.

Fix common audiobook app problems

The library app does not have the title

  1. Check whether the title is available now or can be placed on hold; a hold is different from the library not licensing the book.
  2. Search the library’s website and check whether it offers Hoopla or another digital service.
  3. If you belong to another library legitimately, search that library’s collection too.
  4. Ask the library whether it considers purchase requests for digital audiobooks.

An audiobook will not play offline

  • Confirm the download completed for the full title or the chapters you need.
  • Open the app while online before departure, check storage, and confirm the loan or subscription has not expired.
  • Avoid deleting and reinstalling the app until you have noted your progress; reinstalling can remove downloads and local state.

A membership credit will not apply

  • Check that the title is eligible for credit purchase and that you are signed into the expected account.
  • Compare the direct sale price with the credit’s value before using it.
  • Before cancelling, check the service’s current rules for unused credits and purchased titles.

A title disappears from a subscription

Check whether you were listening through included catalog access rather than a purchase. A title can become unavailable because its catalog or regional rights changed; disappearance does not necessarily indicate an app fault.

Progress does not sync between iPhone and Android

  1. Confirm both devices use the same service account and sign-in method.
  2. Update both apps and reconnect them to the internet so they can sync.
  3. Before reinstalling, note the current chapter and timestamp in case progress is not restored.

A file will not import into a local player

Check the file’s format, whether it is DRM-protected, whether it contains chapter metadata, and whether the player accepts imports from that cloud service. Some players handle one large M4B file better than a folder of separate tracks; support varies by app.
