What Smart Reorder changes
Smart Reorder changes the order of tracks in a playlist you have selected. Spotify announced it on February 25, 2026, as part of its Premium mixing experience. The company says the feature reorders tracks using BPM and key to improve transitions. It does not describe Smart Reorder as adding recommendations or creating a playlist from scratch. Spotify’s announcement is the source for those details.
It helps to separate four things: playlist contents are the songs you chose; playlist order is the sequence they play in; Mix provides controls for blending tracks; and Smart Reorder automatically proposes a different sequence. Spotify has not publicly explained the full algorithm or guaranteed that it preserves a playlist’s original arc or custom transitions.
Spotify has also promoted the feature for festival preparation, describing it as a way to arrange a playlist by BPM and key. That use case makes sense for a set intended to play continuously, but the feature’s DJ-set resemblance is about sequencing—not live performance control. Spotify’s festival-season guidance offers that example.

How to use Smart Reorder
- Open the Spotify mobile app and choose a playlist you want to mix.
- Tap Mix, then tap Edit.
- Choose Smart Reorder.
- Review the new sequence. If needed, adjust individual transitions manually.
- Listen to several consecutive transitions before deciding whether to keep the order.
This is Spotify’s published control path. Its announcement uses mobile-style instructions; it does not document equivalent desktop controls. If the option is absent on desktop, try the current iOS or Android app rather than assuming the feature is universally unavailable on your account.
What BPM and key can—and cannot—tell you
BPM means beats per minute, a basic measure of tempo. Key describes a song’s tonal center, such as C major or A minor. Tracks with compatible tempos and tonal relationships can be less jarring when played consecutively or blended. Spotify identifies BPM and key as Smart Reorder’s criteria, but does not say how it weighs them or whether it considers other musical properties.

Those two measures cannot guarantee a good transition. Drum patterns, arrangement, intros and outros, vocal overlap, loudness, phrasing, energy, and the emotional character of the songs all matter. A pair that looks compatible on paper can still feel wrong; a deliberately abrupt change can be exactly what a playlist needs. Spotify has not publicly established whether Smart Reorder analyzes energy, genre, phrase structure, vocal density, or other factors.
How it differs from shuffle, Mix, and AI DJ

Spotify’s official wording supports calling Smart Reorder automated or algorithmic, not necessarily AI-powered. The announcement specifies BPM and key but does not identify a generative-AI system or describe a broader machine-learning architecture. Spotify lists DJ separately among its Premium features on its U.S. Premium page.

When it is a good fit—and when it is not
Try it for continuity-focused playlists
- Dance, workout, party, road-trip, or pre-show playlists meant to run without frequent pauses.
- Playlists with a reasonably coherent genre, mood, or tempo range.
- Large collections where hand-ordering every song would take too long.
- A first-pass sequence you are willing to listen through and refine.
Keep the order when sequence carries meaning
- Albums, narrative playlists, chronological selections, or sequences built around lyrics and artists.
- Playlists where sudden contrasts are intentional or where the energy curve matters more than seamlessness.
- Collections with spoken-word clips, skits, interludes, ambient or classical pieces, live recordings with variable tempo, long silences, mashups, or already-mixed edits.
Smart Reorder’s central trade-off is continuity versus meaning. A smoother run can also flatten a deliberate build, move a peak too early, or separate songs that belong together. Treat its order as a proposal, not a verdict on how your playlist should feel.
How to judge the new sequence and recover from a bad result
Evaluate the transition as you hear it, rather than relying on metadata alone. As a practical listening check, play the final 20–30 seconds of one track and the opening 20–30 seconds of the next. Consider whether their tempo, tonal feel, volume, energy, and phrasing work together. Repeat that check across several pairings, including the playlist’s opening, peaks, recovery sections, and ending.

Before experimenting with a carefully ordered playlist, consider duplicating it or saving the original order somewhere you can refer to. Spotify’s public announcement does not document a universal undo or rollback command, so do not count on a single restore button. If the result disappoints, use any revert control the app offers, restore the saved sequence manually, or keep the new order and correct individual transitions in Mix.
If Smart Reorder is missing
- Confirm that the account has Premium.
- Update Spotify to the latest version available for your device.
- Try the mobile app and open a conventional playlist you created.
- Look for Mix → Edit. Spotify has not published a complete country-by-country availability list or a definitive minimum app version.
- If the control remains absent, consult Spotify support or wait for account or market availability; reinstalling is not a confirmed fix.
Access depends on Premium and on Mix being available to the account. A secondary report describes availability as limited to Premium users in regions where Mix has launched, but Spotify’s announcement does not set out a complete global rollout policy. Alternatives if you want more control
- Manual Spotify Mix editing: Keep your chosen order and adjust transitions selectively. It takes more work, but suits a playlist with a planned arc.
- Standard ordering: Leave the sequence untouched when story, chronology, or contrast is the point.
- Apple Music AutoMix: Apple’s iOS 26 feature documentation describes AutoMix in the context of automated transitions, rather than Spotify’s explicitly documented playlist reordering by BPM and key. See Apple’s iOS 26 feature document.
- Dedicated DJ software: Choose a DJ application when you need cue points, loops, effects, deck control, or manual beatmatching. That is a more involved toolset, and music-library or streaming compatibility can change. An older djay manual is not evidence of current Spotify compatibility.
Is Premium worth it just for Smart Reorder?
For someone who already values Spotify Premium, Smart Reorder is a useful addition to Mix. If playlist reordering is the only reason to subscribe, weigh that convenience against the monthly cost and the fact that the result may still need manual editing. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page showed Individual at $12.99 per month after an introductory offer when observed in 2026; prices and promotions can change, and the displayed offer may depend on account eligibility. Check Spotify’s current U.S. plan page for current terms.
Spotify said Premium users had streamed more than 220 million hours of mixed playlists since the earlier mixing feature launched. That is Spotify’s company-reported usage figure, not an independently audited measurement. The announcement gives the figure.
