Spotify group chats are real. The company began rolling them out on January 28, 2026, as an expansion of its in-app Messages feature. Free and Premium users aged 16 and older can use group messages in supported markets to share music, playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, and other Spotify content with up to 10 friends. The feature is available through Spotify’s mobile app, not as a separate messaging service.
What Spotify group chats actually are
Spotify first launched Messages in August 2025 as a way to share Spotify content and talk with friends. The January 2026 update expanded that system from one-to-one conversations to group conversations.
Group Messages are designed around Spotify sharing rather than general-purpose communication. Users can send text and emoji reactions, along with songs, albums, artists, playlists, podcast episodes, audiobooks, live events, countdown pages, and other items available through Spotify’s Share menu.
Spotify’s current support documentation calls the limit “up to 10 friends.” It does not clearly explain whether that figure includes the person who creates the chat, so it is safest to treat 10 as the documented friend limit rather than promise a precise total participant count.

Who can use Spotify group chats?
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- Both Free and Premium users are eligible where Messages is available.
- You need to use Spotify’s mobile app.
- Availability depends on your market, account, and the stage of Spotify’s rollout.
Spotify has not published a universal country list that proves the feature is available to every user worldwide. Someone else in the same country may see Messages while it remains absent from your account. A younger member of a Spotify Family plan is not automatically eligible: the account’s age requirement still applies.
How to create a group chat
From your profile
- Open Spotify on a supported mobile device.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Scroll to Messages.
- Tap Create group.
- Select the friends you want to invite.
- Tap Create group again to confirm.
Labels can vary slightly by platform, language, or app version.
From the Share menu
- Open a song, playlist, album, podcast, audiobook, or another shareable Spotify item.
- Tap Share.
- Select multiple friends.
- Send the item.
Spotify’s support page says the sharing flow allows users to select up to 10 people.

Message requests and suggested contacts
If you contact someone you have not previously messaged, Spotify may send a message request instead of opening an immediately active conversation. The recipient can accept, block, or delete the request.
Suggested contacts may include people with whom you have previously shared content, collaborated on playlists, joined Jams or Blends, or shared a Duo or Family plan. That means Spotify activity can influence who appears as a suggested recipient.
Managing members and chat history
The person who creates a group is its administrator. According to Spotify’s Messages support documentation, an admin can add or remove members. The system also distinguishes between administrators, participants, pending users, and blocked users.

You can block other users and opt out of Messages through Spotify’s settings. If you leave a group—or are removed—you will not see messages sent while you are away. This is an important limitation if you expect the conversation history to remain available after rejoining.

Group Messages, Listening Activity, and Jam are different
These features work together, but they are not the same:

A group chat is asynchronous: people can send recommendations and discuss them at different times. A Jam is a synchronized listening session with a shared queue. Spotify’s January 2026 update says a Premium user can initiate a remote Request to Jam from a Messages conversation.

Listening Activity is an optional real-time status. Spotify says that, as of June 17, 2026, it can appear inside group messaging. When enabled, listening status may be shared with a group by default after you join, although it can be turned off for a specific group in that group’s chat settings.

No. Premium is not required to create or participate in ordinary group messages where the feature is available. Free and Premium users can be in the same chat.

Do not subscribe to Premium solely to unlock group chat. Premium may be worthwhile for other reasons, including ad-free listening, offline playback, and full playback control. Spotify’s U.S. pricing page showed Individual at $12.99 per month, Student at $6.99, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99 when checked in August 2026; prices and promotions vary by country and may change.
Privacy and safety
Spotify says Messages are encrypted in transit and at rest. That is not the same as end-to-end encryption: Spotify’s available disclosures do not describe Messages as end-to-end encrypted.
Spotify also says it uses proactive detection technology to identify certain unlawful or harmful content, and that moderators may review reported content. Treat Spotify Messages as an in-app sharing feature, not as a private encrypted messenger.

Review Listening Activity settings as well, because sharing your current listening behavior can reveal more than simply sending a playlist.
What to do if Messages or Create group is missing
- Make sure you are using Spotify’s mobile app rather than only the desktop or web player.
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Tap your profile picture and check for Messages.
- Look for New message or Create group.
- Confirm that the account holder is at least 16.
- Open a Spotify item, tap Share, and check whether multiple contacts can be selected.
- Confirm that the intended recipients have eligible Spotify accounts.
- Review Spotify’s settings for a Messages opt-out.
If the feature is still absent, the most likely explanation is that Messages has not reached your market or account. Spotify’s public documentation does not establish that reinstalling the app, using a VPN, or subscribing to Premium will force access.
What Spotify group chats do not do
- They are not a replacement for WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, SMS, or Discord.
- They are not automatically shared listening sessions; use Jam for synchronized playback.
- They are separate from Blend and Collaborative Playlists.
- They do not make every participant a Premium subscriber.
- Spotify’s documentation does not present them as public group-discovery spaces, voice-chat rooms, or video-chat services.
- They are not necessarily available on every account, in every country, or on desktop.
Bottom line
Spotify group chats make sense for friends who already use Spotify to trade recommendations, discuss podcasts, or plan shared listening. Free users can participate, and Premium is mainly relevant when the conversation leads to features such as remote Jam hosting. But the rollout remains selective, the feature is mobile-only in Spotify’s support documentation, and its privacy model is not described as end-to-end encrypted. Check your own mobile account for Messages rather than assuming that a global launch means immediate access.
